New Kroger fuel center opens Thursday

Kroger’s ninth area fuel center opens tomorrow.

The grocer’s newest gasoline station is in Salem, adjacent to Kroger’s store at 1477 West Main St.

If you’re looking to save money, keep in mind that gasoline prices at this new fuel center will be reduced by 15 cents per gallon for customers who use a Kroger Plus card or a Kroger 1-2-3 Rewards Mastercard tomorrow.

Gasoline prices are expected to rise through the summer, according to this story, which cites the Energy Information Administration. The administration expects fuel prices to average $3 a gallon by the summer.

Jenny. Any word when they plan to remodel that store? It is a mess inside-dirty, old! They need to spend more money on the inside not the outside. Why is it all Salem area Krogers look like trash???? All the Roanoke ones are newly remodeled!! Whats wrong here??

Jenny, Hello. Tell Chris Spartan Square Kroger was completely overhauled appx. twenty years ago. The addition of gasoline is a good one. Food and gas up and never leave the lot, GREAT. Kroger management in the past made effort to close out Kroger in Salem. Salem public outrage changed their mind, thus the overhaul. My family has shopped at Salem Kroger for appx. fifty-five years. Parents and Gran-Parents for appx. eighty years in other locations. We appreciate Kroger in our area. If I have a problem I email headquarters and the wheels start turning. Kroger in my opinion is as clean as any other store. The employees are as good as any other store. I try to spend my money with local merchants, saves gasoline. Thanks, roanoke.com for hearing us out.

Actually the Towers Kroger is pretty nasty, too.

I disagree with Chris – both the Lakeside and the West Salem stores are kept clean. They are crowded, but there isn’t really any room for expansion. I do agree, though that the most upscale format stores are located in SW county. Do those residents really spend more for groceries than Salem or North County residents, or Roanoke city residents?

I like the way the international foods section is set up at West Salem. They offer a lot more choices than typical Kroger stores. I wish West Salem and Lakeside had an expanded natural section like the one at either Hollins or at Towne Square.

With all the “competition” among the discount gas stations along West Main St. in Salem, Orange Ave. Roanoke, and everywhere else, why is it that gas can still rise to a $3 a gallon price, predictable 6 months ahead of time? A little over a year ago the prices crashed from $4 a gallon to $1.35 in 4 weeks time. I’ve never understood “the price of gas” because it doesn’t seem to work on the same “supply and demand” principles of everything else. Comment?

There is empty space on the other side of Dollar Tree. If they could convince them to move down then they could expand into that space like they did their store on Williamson Rd.
