Swipe your Kroger card at Shell stations

If you have a Kroger loyalty card and enjoy getting discounts when you fuel up at the gasoline pump, you’ll be happy to hear today’s news.

Starting Monday, Shell stations in the Roanoke Valley and surrounding areas will take Kroger cards for up to 10-cent savings a gallon for gasoline.

Some Shell stations already are accepting Kroger cards, including the Country Store on Starkey Road in Roanoke County.

Well that’s cool. Only problem here in the NRV is I only know of 2…both in C’burg near I-81. Though the one with Henry’s Memphis BBQ usually is priced well to begin with, while the one by Denny’s always runs 15-20 cents more per gallon, even though they’re separated by maybe a half mile.

Does using the card at Shell have any effect on using it at Kroger? That is, when using it at Kroger, you get a one-time discount. I wouldn’t want a .30 discount I have “earned” to be wiped away by Shell’s .10 maximum.

Also, does Shell collect personally identifiable information from my Kroger card? Or any kind of information that they will use for intrusive marketing?

    Jed,
Those are good questions. I’ll try to find answers.

    Jed,
I found out that the maximum 10 cents per gallon savings at Shell does not impact additional points that you may have on your Kroger card. For instance, you only can redeem 100 points (10 cents off a gallon) at a time per visit to a Shell station. Additional points beyond 100 that you may have accumulated on your Kroger card will remain to be used at Kroger fuel stations or at Shell (maximum of 100 points) during another visit.

Also, the personal information that Kroger collects through its loyalty cards is not transferred to Shell through this program.

    Hope this helps!

Actually there is a Shell on Brambleton that is excepting Kroger cards.

God so irritated at the Kroger gas station on Brambleton today! Every pump I pulled up to had “Cash customers only” on it. When I finally found one that accepted debit/credit cards, then it would not take my Kroger card OR my debit card. Notice on the screen stated “Invalid Loyalty”, whatever that means! Went to Shell instead and had no problems.

#7 I have a hard time believing all the pumps said “Cash Customers Only”. I do know the ones on the far ends are pay at the pump only. I frequently get the invalid loyalty message because the bar code on my Kroger card is fading. I just enter my phone number and have no problems getting my points discount.

#7 they actually say Cash Customers Please Pay First.
