A blog reader emailed me this week about a sign in front of Kohl’s announcing that the store will open Sept. 25 and hold a grand opening Sept. 28.
I know the opening date isn’t news because The Storefront reported that in April. Still, many readers have asked for an update so I decided to drive out to Hunting Hills Plaza off U.S. 220 to see how the shopping center looks now.
The Kohl’s sign is mounted on the building. The parking lot has been repaved and painted with fresh, white parking stripes (Do you remember the awful potholes that were there? I do.) New trees and shrubs line the building. The entrance has been shifted to the middle of the building. And, there is space on the left side of the building for additional tenant.
Roanoke Building Commissioner Jeff Shawver said Thursday that his department hasn’t received any filings for those spaces.
On another note, I quite enjoyed The Storefront’s January post that reported Kohl’s had filed building permits with the city, but wouldn’t confirm to a reporter that they were coming to Roanoke.
On Thursday, Christie Wolfe, a Kohl’s spokeswoman, said in an email that she was happy to confirm Kohl’s was coming to Roanoke. Then, despite the sign in front of the store, she wrote: “While we haven’t announced a firm date yet, we typically open stores in the spring and fall.”
