Fleet Feet Sports, Play It Again Sports, to move to larger spaces

The owners of Play It Again Sports have sold the store’s building in front of Lowe’s on Franklin Road to Fleet Feet Sports.

Fleet Feet Sports bought the building for $1.3 million, according to a statement from Waldvogel, which represented the fitness footwear and apparel business in the sale.

Play It Again will vacate the building in late March and reopen in a larger space at Madison Square on Electric Road, next to Plato’s Closet, in April.  (Madison Square is also where Texas Steakhouse and Direct Buy were located before they closed.)

Fleet Feet Sports plans to move from its current location at Townside Festival Shopping Center to the new building in July, said Robin Lewis, who with her husband, Blaine Lewis, owns the business.

Look for more details on the move in Sunday’s Retail Roundup column.

I like to see local business grow and use spaces that are already present rather than build something new. I wish more retailers would recycle vacant buildings more often. I understand there are sometimes renovation costs higher than a new building cost but perhaps the city/county could (or does) give tax credits to businesses for reusing the buildings. I hate seeing big, vacant or sparselyfor used buildings and something new sitting next to it. I thought it was a good idea when Mcdonalds tore down the old building and built a new one in the same spot rather than leave another building vacant.

P.s. i put in that %$#!* captcha code correctly 5 times and it told me every time it was wrong darn you captcha code!

@katie: Sorry about the captcha code (we’d get a lot of spam without it), but thanks for being so persistent!

Full of questions this week, hope you don’t mind Amanda.

What is the status of the BMW bike shop that was to take over the former gas station in Salem? Haven’t driven by recently but just curious over whether it is open yet or not (I think I remember the article stating a December or Jan. opening).

Also, I heard recently from two shop keepers at Tangelwood Mall that two restaurants could be built in the parking lot there (I think it was brought up on here in the past, too). Know anything about that possibility?

@Roa10: Frontline Eurosports in Salem should open by the end of the month. They are already starting to get in shipments of motorcycles. As for the restaurants, I’ve heard that too (specifically I’ve heard Bonefish). But nobody – local government, the restaurant, ect. – is talking just yet.

    Good to know, thank you.

Bonefish? That’s big time! Heard any rumors about a Chili’s coming to the area? Maybe a Jason’s Deli? I’m just hoping.

Fleet Feet is a great company with super knowledgeable and helpful staff. They’re an asset to the community and I hope they do well in the new space.

Bonefish would be awesome if it opened there! The first time I ate at one was in St. Pete FL several years ago. The county really needs to do more to revitalize the Tanglewood area. They keep losing everything to Vally View. Some trendy teen stores would be a plus to add to Tangelwood and I think they would get more traffic that way.

Wasn’t Bonefish one of the restaurants that pulled out of the Keagy Village about 1-2 years ago, or am I thinking of another business?

Shannon Tanglewood would love to have some of those stores but those stores don’t want Tanglewood. It’s simply not big enough. If you look in other cities malls that size rarely have any of the newer stores. The only time they do is if they are the only mall in town.

I still don’t understand the Chili’s deal. Several years ago I contacted the franchise rights owner for our area and he said this area was saturated. He said he reviewed our area but didn’t think we could support another restaurant. Since then we’ve had at least 10 new places open without any issues. Crazy.

@Original Greg: Interesting info on Chili’s. I’d never heard that.

    Scott:

I also remember Bonefish as being planned for Keagy Village. Hmmm –

I’d been dealing with knee and foot pain since taking up running in Feb 2011. After trying to run in 3 other pairs from other stores, I finally bought running shoes from Fleet Feet with help from one of the saleswomen. I just completed my first marathon (actually my first race EVER) on January 8th in those shoes! Looking forward to the new store.
