Zumiez, Complete Nutrition, to open at Valley View Mall

A snowboarding and skate shop and a nutritional supplement store will open at Valley View Mall this spring.

Zumiez, a Seattle-based retailer that sells footwear, apparel and accessories for skaters and snowboarders, will open on the lower level near the entrance of JC Penney, according to a news release from the mall. The store was established in 1978 and has more then 400 stores.

Complete Nutrition will open on the upper level between Hollister and Hot Topic.

Have you heard of Zumiez? Do you know any teens who will be excited to shop there?

Zumiez is great. Weird that the mall’s news release only mentioned footwear, apparel, and accessories. They actually do sell equipment. Normally I’m all about local over chains, but Greenhouse Boardshop is the only skate shop in town anymore and they take full advantage of that. A bit of competition will be good for local skateboarders.

The teens I know do a lot of online buying already, so I’m not sure how well a brick&mortar will do, especially with the hassle of parking and making their way through the mall. Either way Greenhouse is going to have to step up its game and hopefully skaters will benefit.

@tass: Thanks for your comment – I’m not in touch with many teens (or with skaters or snowboarders ) so I wondered what that crowd would think of this store.

I asked my students… they pronounced Zumiez as “awesome!”

great just what Valley View needs- another teen store- so much for the mall trying to invest in adult/ upscale tenants!! Come on Valley View- Whats wrong with you!!

@chris define what you mean by “adult/upscale”. Looking at Zumiez’s website, they carry the upscale brands of skiing and “snow” based sports clothing, jackets and equipment. While their demographic may be the 18-39 year old. In the legal sense, that is “adult”

Will you not be happy till there is a Neimen’s, Bloomingdales and Saks in Valley View? with a Whole Foods Store in the parkinglot?

Anyone who has shopped at Greenhouse knows that they have expanded their selection and lowered their prices since moving from downtown to Valley View and becoming the only shop in town a few years ago. This can hardly be considered “taking full advantage” of their customers. I managed a locally owned skateshop in a larger city several years ago and can tell you first-hand that the business model of Zumiez is to set up in close proximity to the established local shop and operate at a loss, if necessary, in order to put the local shop out of business. With the local shop gone, Zumiez can then take over the remaining brick-and-mortar customers and, most importantly, drive as many others as possible to shop at their mega-website. The end result is the loss of a locally-owned business, and your local dollars going to the Zumiez corporate headquarters in Seattle. Awesome.

I have kids and love to see more options for them, but the mall is a complete joke. I hardly consider Zumiez to be a store to hold up a corner of one of the malls main areas. We need more adult friendly shopping to steer it away from the image of a trash hangout. Bring on J Crew, Banana Republic, Brookstone, Sharper Image, etc.

Happy to see the mall full. Lots of other malls have tons of vacant stores. Does anyone know if it will be going in the old Aeropostale spot (when the PS from Aeropostale store closes at the end of January)? Also, in reply to Chris, I heard Banana Republic is going in at Valley View where Abercrombie used to be. Hope that makes you happy:)

trina: I asked Valley View Mall general manager Louise Dudley what’s going on with the old Abercrombie space, and she told me the mall is in negotiations with a national retailer. She said she couldn’t disclose the name of the retailer until the lease is signed. As for the PS from Aeropostale, I haven’t heard anything, but I’ll try to find out.

Scott you must not shop much or care about trying to make Valley View more adult friendily as well as upacale!!!

  11. Chris | January 23, 2012 at 6:17 pm

Scott oh boy. Surprised you even have heard of Neimons and Saks! Anyway Valley View needs more shoppers unlike you if things are ever going to change in this town.

  12. Chris | January 23, 2012 at 6:21 pm

Trina- wow that would be great if Banana Republic came. Where did you hear that? I had heard that also but also heard that Sephora or a place similar to was taking that space. Hope the BR rumor is true!! That would be great for Valley View!!!

  13. Scott | January 23, 2012 at 7:28 pm

@Chris, I do shop, but I tend not to go to the mall that often. But for example Sharper Image no longer has retail stores, and Brookstone is overpriced for the items they sell. I doubt they would do well in this area. Banana Republic Would be nice, I have bought a few items from them in DC area, but i dont think that makes VV “adult friendly”. Maybe toss in an Esprit? J. Crew is nice, but I think I rather see an H&M in this area.

Really hope Banana Republic goes in the former Abercrombie space. I think Banana Republic would fill a niche that no other store in Roanoke really does. The same parent company owns Gap and Old Navy so their past performance at Valley View will naturally have some bearing on Banana Republic’s coming to the mall.

Hey Chris maybe we could all use a little youthful enthusiasm.Don’t dis our young generation because we all have faults.Encouarage not discourage. From a 60 year old grandma who envies a little youthful spirit.

I am going to check out this store for myself for nutrition information and maybe a cute jacket.

    Um… Kathy, it’s not “youthful enthusiasm”… it’s a tenuous grip on reality.

Amanda has already reported that Ulta is going in the old A&F space, so can we stop speculating?
