Goodwill store in Moneta plans expansion
The Goodwill store at The Forum at Westlake in Moneta will expand next month, nearly doubling its size.
The store is about 4,000 square feet now, and will be 7,500 square feet when the expansion is complete, according to a news release from Goodwill.
Work on the new space (actually two spaces that were formerly were leased to a salon and a construction business) is happening now. When it is complete April 9, the store will move into the new space while the old space is renovated. That work should take about two weeks.
The expanded store will sell a larger selection of clothing, books and housewares and furniture.
The store will be open during regular hours (Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.) during the expansion.

It amazes me how Goodwill is able to do all the “expanding” they do & keep up with the enormous overhead of all their facilities.
Speaking of Westlake, I saw a for lease sign at Westlake Jewelers. Did they move or close?
Um, Steve… everything they sell is donated to them for free, so all sales are 100% profit. That might explain things a bit.
Not to be naive, minimum $30 / sq. ft. X 7500 = $225,000 annual rent, plus lights, gas, water. Labor?
That’s a whole bunch of $4 pants to be sold!
plus they are government run. that explains a lot of it.
Goodwill is an international not-for-profit organization.
Thanks, OJ, for responding to Fred. Goodwill does receive some money from the government to support its mission. According to Goodwill’s website, it receives $444 million from the government. The organization’s retail sales bring in $2.69 billion. There’s more info on Goodwill’s financials here.
Plus they employ a lot of people who otherwise might not have jobs. Win all around.
The concept is good and sure they help people, but something doesn’t seem right. Why so many high end stores and how can they afford to build new stores from scratch. The CEO gets paid around $250,000 per year and five other employees earn over $100,000 per year. Local governments contribute and the Western Virginia Workforce program passes much state money to them as well for “training” programs. Perhaps the paper could look further into the finances and how many people are getting helped. Maybe it is all ok, but the salaries seem way too high to me. Here is the last tax return for our local Goodwill with some of the salaries.

We are a computer company that works with many Goodwill groups across the country. They are a great group of people where there main objective is putting people to work. Goodwill takes individuals that have barriers to employment and gives them the skills to work. Before you post comments, do some research. Look at the stories of all the individuals that have been helped through Goodwill and it may change your views.
