Roanoke Target remodel has begun

The Target store at Valley View is undergoing a remodel. Photo by Amanda Codispoti

The Dumpsters, construction material and heavy equipment arrived a few weeks ago, taking up four rows of parking outside Target.

And by the looks and sounds of it Monday, the nearly $1 million remodel at the Valley View store in Roanoke has begun.

The snack cafe is blocked off with tarps, and hammering could be heard in the back of the store.

The store also recently put out its new plastic shopping carts and baskets.

The remodel will update the store’s look, but perhaps the biggest change is that Target is installing more coolers so it can carry more food. Produce, meats and baked goods will be added to the grocery offerings. Read more on that here.

In the meantime, we’re likely to see some merchandise shuffled around the store as the beauty, home and baby departments are revamped.

The work is scheduled to be complete in June.

Off topic, but I went to Daleville Food Lion last night and the prices were noticeably lower. I remember your post about it, but this was the first i’d seen of the change in the store. I’ve been choosing Daleville Food Lion over Kroger since it is never usually busy. If I want a gas discount, i’ll just go around the corner to the Pilot on 220 as their gas is usually 10 cents cheaper anyways and equal whatever discount Kroger gives you.

I noticed remodeling also going on on the back, right side at Tower Mall. What’s going on there?

@daisy: Thanks for reporting back on what you found!

Please Valley Bank keep us from fighting words and let us know whats going in old Ukrops!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Amanda Codispoti | April 3, 2012 at 2:45 pm

@Chris: I just talked with Valley Bank president Ellis Gutshall, and he said they are still talking with several potential grocer tenants, which he wouldn’t name. It doesn’t sound like Whole Foods is one of them, though.

What about Kroger? Everyone seems to think that is coming but I do not think so! What’s your take?

  8. Amanda Codispoti | April 3, 2012 at 3:17 pm

@Chris: Kroger told me in December they weren’t interested in the site. I called their spokesman this morning on another matter, and had hoped to ask him again about Ivy Market, but I’m still waiting for him to return my call.

Amanda, I remember Steak & Shake was supposed to start construction in Mid March for a summer opening, even after an earlier delay. It is now April and I have yet to see any action on the proposed site. Any updates?

Has construction started on the Steak ‘n Shake yet?

  11. Amanda Codispoti | April 3, 2012 at 4:36 pm

Wow, Roa10 and Justin must be hungry today for steakburgers! I just spoke to the owners. Construction was delayed because of changes to building plans, and should start in 30 to 45 days.

HEY AMANDA EVER SINCE THE BONSACK KROGER OPENED THERE HAS BEEN A SIGN FOR VALLEY BANK , IS IT EVER COMING? IF NOT WHY DON’T THEY TAKE THE SIGN DOWN ?

  13. Amanda Codispoti | April 5, 2012 at 2:17 pm

@Chris: Here is what Valley Bank President and CEO Ellis Gutshall said about the bank branch at the Bonsack Kroger.

“Due to the economic downturn that commenced in 2008, we put construction of this facility on hold. With the improving economic trends and the strong earnings performance of the Bank in 2010 and 2011, I would hope we can get this on the runway for 2013. Construction time is about 6 months.”
