Five Guys to open restaurants in Roanoke, Christiansburg

Five Guys Burgers and Fries will open restaurants in Roanoke and Christiansburg by the end of the year.

The Roanoke location should open at Tanglewood Mall in October or November, said Molly Catalano, a spokeswoman for the burger restaurant.

She wasn’t sure where at the mall the restaurant would be located, but it sounded like it might be the former Charlie’s American Grille location in the front of the mall. Charlie’s closed in September.

A spokesman for Tanglewood Mall said he couldn’t comment because the lease hadn’t been signed.

The last Five Guys in the Roanoke Valley was in Salem on West Main Street. The company closed the restaurant in January 2011, having decided not to renew its lease at Mill Lane Commons.

The Christiansburg Five Guys will open at Spradlin Farms shopping center by the end of August or beginning of September, Catalano said. Work to outfit the space for the restaurant should start in June.

Five Guys already operates a restaurant in Blacksburg on University City Boulevard.

*Squeal* I <3 Five Guys and was so sad when they left Salem. Happy that we'll be able to get those burgers again.

Awesome news! Is this the old Cheeburger place? Btw whatever happened to them? They always seemed decently busy and the food was always great.

Hopefully this can begin the revitalization of Tanglewood!

Tanglewood? They might as well plan on going out of business from the start. Surely they can find a better location. What about the old Pitt Boss?

@Brian: Cheeburger Cheeburger opened in 2007 and closed in 2010. We reported at the time of the closing that the owner blamed the economy and slow foot traffic at the mall.

Charlie’s American Grill opened January 2011 and closed in September.

Brian- maybe when it was Cheese Burger Cheese Burger (?) there was some business but as Charlies I never saw anyone in the place. 5 Guys is really good so I hope they attract business, but I have my doubts. The Burger Bistro which is in the old 5 Guys location is fantastic. Great burgers and really friendly service.

@RM: I have bad news for you regarding Burger Bistro. They closed Monday. I’m working on an update.

Awful Location for a good burger joint. I have a hard time seeing it being successful at Tanglewood.

Towers would have been the perfect location!!

What is the word on the Frank Beamer restaurant that is supposed to be opening on Salem Ave, at West Station?

  12. Amanda Codispoti | May 10, 2012 at 11:44 am

@Sarah: Construction on the interior of the restaurant has started. It’s scheduled to open Aug. 1.

If anyone can make it there, I’d say Five Guys has the best shot. Name recognition, quality product. And, it seems like the retail scene on that side of town is starting to happen again. Certainly more accessible than Valley View has become, if not yet as hip.

Hope they will make it, but have my doubts.

Is this Five Guys owned by the same folks who owned the one in Salem?

BTW…what in the world is up with that old framing place/house on Memorial Ave by VA Heights Elementary (sort of across from Norbertos)? There seems to be no one living/working there OR someone is but is just a hermit. Just wondered because the grass is so high and now the pictures you use to be able to see in the front windows are gone.

@daisy: The Five Guys at Tanglewood and in Christiansburg are company owned.

Terrible location….. We definately need a good burger joint, but Tanglewood is a Fly Trap… Another unsuspecting business owner caught…
If the franchisor did their homework they would see that mall on DEAD MALLS.COM

I AM WITH YOU AMANDA THESE 2 DIDN’T SURVIVE AND IT WON’T EITHER IT NEEDS TO BE UP ON 460 NEAR BONSAC !!!!

  19. Steve | May 17, 2012 at 10:44 am

So CHRIS, with your great insight, and crystal clear ball to gaze at, why don’t you open a business in the area you suggest?

All it takes is between $50,000 & $500,000 in franchise fees, plus all the sundry expenses, 12-20 hour days, employees and those challenges, +++

Five Guys will do great at Tanglewood. Excellent parking, good location. People will flock to this location. Watch and see!

  21. Bryan Alms | May 18, 2012 at 12:51 pm

K&W Cafeteria has been doing business just fine at this location for over 40 years, the theatres at the back are busy, and those folks will LOVE 5 Guys close by!

  22. Bryan Alms | May 18, 2012 at 12:54 pm

The failure of Cheeburger Cheeburger can be attributed to one thing. The owner.

  23. Elle | June 25, 2012 at 12:33 pm

I tried Five Guys in Blacksburg a few months ago. It was DISGUSTING. Expensive, too! Two of us had a hamburger, fries and a drink for $19. Really?

  24. Other John | June 26, 2012 at 8:36 am

I like the Five Guys food, and they’re one of the few places where I can actually eat the fries since they don’t also fry things like breaded chicken nuggets or tenders. But they are mighty expensive, and that is why I don’t go there very often. When they first opened, the prices were reasonable. But now, dropping close to $10 for a lunch, that’s pushing the limits of what I will do on a regular basis since I can eat out at other places for the same and have a second meal of the leftovers, or get almost enough food to build my own lunches at the office for a full week.

They have begun the build out of the five guys in Christiansburg! It is in the same strip mall as Pier One =) So excited for this to come to the area, they will do big business!
