Cardinal Camera to open Roanoke store

Cardinal Camera, a Pennsylvania-based company headed by a Liberty University alumnus, will open in Roanoke this summer.

Owner and president Kurt Seelig said the store should open at Valley View Mall on Aug. 1. It will be located on the upper level near Macy’s where Optometric World closed in March.

Seelig opened a camera store in Lynchburg about a month ago, and said he quickly realized the opportunity in the Roanoke market.

The store not only sells cameras and camera accessories, but also offers classes as well as repairs and printing services. The store’s printing services include printing digital photos on metal, canvas and even iPhone cases.

Seelig’s grandfather started the business in 1937. In the past three years, the company has grown from one store in Lansdale, Pa., to 11. Seelig said the 2009 bankruptcy and closure of the Ritz Camera stores has opened up the market for his business to expand.

The Roanoke store will be the second in Virginia.

Cool, I’ve heard about the Lynchburg store.

Hmmm… you’d think Ritz’s bankruptcy might make anyone a little wary of trying to open a camera shop, especially where one has already failed.
