In case you missed it…two restaurant openings this week

Food writer Lindsey Nair has details on two restaurants that opened in Roanoke this week.

One is River and Rail, which opened Thursday inside the old Lipes Pharmacy building in South Roanoke. Lindsey has more on the restaurant, including a link to a sample menu, on her Fridge Magnet blog.

The second restaurant to open this week is Benny Marconi’s pizza, which I first told you about last month in a Retail Roundup column. Two Virginia Tech students started the pizza shop in Blacksburg (which is called Benny Marzano’s) last fall and on Thursday opened a restaurant in downtown Roanoke, where Glazed Bisque-It closed last year. Benny’s is known for its huge slices of pie. To see just how big these slices are, check out the picture on Lindsey’s blog.

I went by O’Charley’s today @ Valley View. They had a sign on the door saying temporary closed.

@Mae: Thanks for the tip. I’ve called the restaurant’s spokeswoman and she’s looking into it. Hope to have an answer for you soon.

@Mae: Here is what the O’Charley’s spokeswoman said in an email about the closure:

“The temporary closure is due to a broken hot water heater. The restaurant cannot function without hot water so had to temporarily close while the repair and minor clean-up was taking place.

The hot water heater is currently being replaced and the restaurant should reopen later today.”

@ Amanda: Thanks, Have a good weekend.

O’Charleys should have explained on their sign why they were closed, otherwise people get all kinds of ideas. That is how rumors start.

Anything new in regards to Steak n Shake?

  7. Amanda Codispoti | June 18, 2012 at 9:26 am

@Jeffrey: Construction is supposed to start this month. I last talked with the franchisee in late May, so it’s probably time to call and ask whether things will get started this month.

Do you know who the contractor is for the Steak N Shake?

  9. Amanda Codispoti | June 18, 2012 at 10:06 am

    @Angie: I don’t, but I can ask.

    Steak N Shake???
Hold on while I hold my breath………………….BAM!!!!
Sorry. Passed out and hit the floor.
Have they even filed for a new permit?
Hate to make a comment like the one I did. But when it’s delay, delay and excuse, excuse…….it’s hard not to after so long.

@Mike D: I’ll work on getting an update this week. The latest filing on the property is a June 6 citation for weeds and trash.
