UPDATED: Know which stores are open? List them here

UPDATE July 3: Towers Shopping Center has power and stores are open. Tanglewood Mall remains closed. END UPDATE

Looking for a break from the heat or in search of generators and ice? Hopefully your fellow blog readers and I can help by pointing out which stores are open and closed.

If you’ve been out and have noticed closings or openings please feel free to list them here. Also, please note that the status of these stores is subject to change as power is restored. There is also a list going on The Roanoke Times’ Facebook page.

Here is a list of stores that I know are open. Tanglewood Mall is closed.

  • Valley View Mall
  • Target
  • PetSmart
  • Best Buy
  • Staples
  • All Kroger stores in the Roanoke and New River valleys

If you need car chargers for your cell phones, the Verizon Wireless Zone stores on U.S. 220 and U.S 460 are open, according to the stores’ Facebook page.

Any idea whether Kroger at Towers is accepting credit/debit cards?

What happened at Tanglewood? They were open yesterday…

  8. Amanda Codispoti | July 2, 2012 at 4:58 pm

@Mark: It is possible they lost power during the storm that hit early this morning. We reported that an additional 30,000 AEP customers lost power during the latest storm, although many of those were in Christiansburg and Wytheville.

  9. Amanda Codispoti | July 2, 2012 at 5:00 pm

@Jill:I called Kroger at Towers and they told me they are accepting all forms of payment.

  10. Jill | July 2, 2012 at 5:01 pm

    Thank you!

The Tanglewood area lost power in last night’s/this morning’s storms. I heard the Tanglewood Kroger is open for the purchase of ice and water only and I would imagine it is cash only.

I just saw on WSLS that gas stations are having trouble getting product. Kroger @ Towers gas station is open and I got Regular Unleaded there today around 5:30pm. $2.89 before Kroger discount.

The Kangaroo/Marathon station in Hollins is out of gas. Not sure when they are getting more.

Also, You should do a list of places that are open and raising prices. The Hollins Kroger jacked up the price for ice. They were charging over $4 for a 10lb bag and then they changed it to 20lb bags.

@Original Greg: Thanks. I’m working on a story today about how businesses are faring, so I will call that gas station.

What happened to Franks at Brambleton? It was open Saturday and looks like they closed up shop today?

  17. Jason | July 3, 2012 at 2:22 pm

As in signs taken down and everything.

  18. Amanda Codispoti | July 3, 2012 at 2:28 pm

@Jason: I am trying to find out. I left a message with the owner of Frank’s at Hunting Hills. Apparently his brother-in-law is the owner of the Frank’s on Brambleton.

Passing along this info from U.S. Cellular:

U.S. Cellular is offering residents free Internet access, charging stations and battery swaps (customers can come in and exchange a dead or dying battery for a fully charged one for free) at any local retail store, for those without power.

  26. Amanda Codispoti | July 5, 2012 at 9:55 am

Is anyone having a hard time finding batteries? Batteries Plus reports that they received a shipment of D batteries.

  27. Amanda Codispoti | July 5, 2012 at 3:15 pm

Also, just learned that Gander Mountain is still without power, possibly until Saturday, according to a company spokesman.

  28. Jaime Walsh | July 5, 2012 at 4:13 pm

Jimmy Johns 460 is up and running. All the food was immediately taken to refrigerated and frozen areas upon the power going out. Extra care was taken! We are up and running with AC and ready to serve you some delicious sandwiches! Open 11-10 7 days a week 904-7737.
