Retail Roundup: Two Polished spas set to open this summer

The temporary retail location at the Shoppes at West Village will close when a new spa opens this summer at the Forum.

Polished by Claire V., a downtown Roanoke spa created by the founder of Claire V. handbags, will open in two new locations this summer.

Construction is slated to begin within the next week or two inside a 1,300-square-foot space at The Forum, a shopping plaza on Starkey Road in southwest Roanoke County.

That location will offer facials, body treatments, massages, waxing, pedicures and manicures, said Laura Godfrey, who started the handbag and spa businesses.

The Roanoke County location also will sell bath and body products, including Bare Minerals makeup.

Polished opened a retail-only store at the Shoppes at West Village in November. Godfrey said that location was always intended to be temporary as she had hoped to open a spa in a larger space in that shopping center after the holidays.
Those plans didn’t work out, she said, so she sought the former Through the Garden Gate space at The Forum.

The West Village store will close when the new spa opens late this summer.
Spa fans in the New River Valley soon will be able to visit a Polished location, too.

A spa on South Main Street in Blacksburg is set to open this month, Godfrey said.
That spa has been in the works since last fall, but construction issues delayed the opening, she said.

Polished opened its first spa in downtown Roanoke on Market Street in 2009.
The majority of the spa’s employees are graduates of Bethany Hall, a substance abuse rehabilitation center for women.

The Roanoke County and Blacksburg spas also will employ Bethany Hall graduates. They are trained at a beauty school that Godfrey created exclusively for the spas.

Collectively, the spas will employ about 40 people.

Hey Amanda, you mentioned a couple months ago that PetSmart was looking into opening a second store in Roanoke. Did you ever hear any more news on that?

@Roa10: Let me put in a call to them and get back to you. Last I heard they were working on negotiating a lease at an undisclosed space in Roanoke.

@Roa10: A PetSmart spokeswoman says they are opening a second store in Roanoke, but then said she couldn’t tell me where it will open until they have a grand opening date. “We can’t talk about it until we have solid dates,” she said.

I am pretty sure I know where it’s going, but before I start a rumor I am going to try to get in touch with the property owner to see whether they will confirm that the pet store has signed a lease.

@Roa10: The property owner won’t confirm the lease, if, in fact, I’ve contacted the correct property owner. I bet we’ll see a building permit filed soon that will tell us what we want to know.

I’m curious for more details on the Blacksburg location for Polished. Been waiting for them to open for a while now…

Thanks Amanda for checking up on it. Much appreciated.

@Laura: The owner told me the Blacksburg spa will be 2,200 square feet with 10 nail stations and two treatment rooms. If you have other questions let me know what they are and I can follow up with the owner.

Can you give us a status update on which shopping centers are open and which remain closed? I’d like to shop at Target soon. Thanks.

@Susan: We have a list of open businesses on The Roanoke Times Facebook page. I called Target and they are open. Valley View Mall is also open. Tanglewood Mall is closed, and it sounded like businesses at Towers Shopping Center are also closed, except for Kroger which running on generators.

Thanks, Amanda! I guess I’m just looking forward to their opening, since it’s been delayed. I hope you’ll cover their grand opening!
