Sarah’s Place to open at the Patrick Henry in the former Uptown Joe’s space
A grab-and-go eatery serving breakfast and lunch will open in about three weeks at the Patrick Henry where Uptown Joe’s closed in March.
Amy Carter, the proprietor, has named the restaurant Sarah’s Place after Patrick Henry’s first wife, Sarah Shelton. The restaurant should open the week of July 30, she said.
Carter, who has diabetes, is focusing the restaurant on healthy, fresh eating.
“I want people to understand that you can eat well and eat healthy at the same time,” she said.
The space, which is still furnished, has only a convection oven, so the menu will be somewhat limited to pastries and baked goods for breakfast and sandwiches and salads for lunch.
Carter has worked as a pastry chef and currently runs Star City Events, a local event planning and catering business.
In addition to helping customers eat healthy, Carter also wants to help charities and local artists. She said a portion of a month’s proceeds will go toward a local charity, and she’ll allow local artists to display their work at the restaurant.
The restaurant will be open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
On the subject of restaurant news, food writer Lindsey Nair has this information about 1906 Ale House, which will open this fall in the former Isaacs Mediterranean restaurant space.

Exciting news about the Ale House coming to the old Isaac’s place in Grandin!
LOVE the announcement of a healthy restaurant … however, I think there’s a small typo in her quote.
@Elle: Thanks for pointing that out. It was missing a word but I’ve fixed it!
Now if she’ll just keep getting that great coffee that Joe’s had… from Star City Coffee. Mmmmm…
Psst… Amanda – did you ever get any follow up on the former Texas Steakhouse space on 419?
@Wilson: That’s where MedExpress Urgent Care is going in.
Amanda, can you find out what happened to Success China Buffet on the corner of Peter’s Creek and Melrose? I did not care for their buffet, but the takeout was unfailingly good. (In my experience.)
@David: Several readers have asked about that restaurant (and you’re not the first to speak well of their takeout), but I haven’t been able to contact the owners to find out why they closed. They’ve been closed since at least the beginning of May.
Amanda, Do you have any information about Szechuan at Town Square Shopping Center in NW Roanoke? Tried calling the number for takeout and it said the number has been disconnected.
@Ericka: The restaurant closed June 30, citing competition from Hibachi across the street. I’ve been talking with the owner this week and will have more on his struggle in Sunday’s Retail Roundup column. In the meantime, their restaurant at 5207 Bernard Drive near Tanglewood Mall remains open.
We used to go to Szechuan a lot to celebrate on a budget. The quality was not good at all in the last year.
If they had stayed true to their quality and service we would have never stopped going.
Never good in the northwest section but excellent in the southwest part of town. It was like they were two totally different places!!
Did you hear anything more on Ukrops space Amanda? What about Bananna Republic? Keep hearing that Valley View is trying to land them!!
Thanks for the update on MedExpress. Erica, I agree about Szechuan – stopped going there completely. For take out or a quick lunch (no buffet) I have found the new Golden Wok (Williamson Road behind Famous Anthony’s at Brookside) to be pretty tasty.
@Chris: When I have something to report on Ukrops I’ll let you know. As for Banana Republic, where would they go at Valley View Mall? I can’t think of any vacant space at the mall large enough for that store now that we know Ulta is gong in where Abercrombie & Fitch was located.
Szechuan is still my favorite place for Chinese food. I’ve been to all three but mostly go to the SW location. Really thought the Town Square location had a great buffet. Also, I never get an eggroll unless it’s Szechuan…then I get two or three
Haha, thanks, Amanda!
I seem to be one of a few readers from the NRV … but I’m moving to the Roanoke Valley in the near future. It’s great to hear about the development there! I live in Montgomery County currently; do you get any information about development outside of the towns?
They are trying to lure them for future expansion. District 2 in front of SEARS TO BE BUILT is the rumor. Did you get in touch with BR? Also where would Choptile go? Talked to a manager and they are coming!! Possibily THERE AS WELL!
@Elle: I tend to focus my reporting on the Roanoke Valley because we have a bureau in New River that catches retail and real estate news. I do link to their stories from time to time.
@Chris: Banana Republic has not responded to my inquiries. I’ve put in a call to Chipotle. Will let you know if I hear back.
Do you have contact info for Amy Carter? I would like to ask her about employment opportunities
@Chris: If it is okay with you, I’ll share your email address with her.
Please do. That would be great.
