Kroger extends fuel savings program

With gas prices steadily rising, Kroger is extending its fuel savings program through the end of the year.

Savings of up to $2.00 a gallon can be achieved, depending on how customers use their Kroger plus card benefits and payment methods.

Gas prices in the Roanoke Valley are averaging more than $3.60 a gallon, according to motortrend.com.

“We have extended this promotion at our customers’ request,” said Carl York, spokesman.  “We know it comes at a good time with the continued increase in prices at the pump.”

According to a press release from the grocer, here are the ways Kroger customers can earn fuel points:

- Customers earn 100 fuel points for every $100 in groceries purchased.  Now, up to 2000 points can be redeemed for up to $2.00 in savings – at Kroger fuel centers in one fill up.

- Buying gift cards to use on gas purchases will earn customers double points. For every purchase of $50 in gift cards from Kroger’s Gift Card Mall, customers receive 100 fuel points. For a limited time, Kroger is offering quadruple fuel points on most gift cards as part of our back to school savings event.

- When customers use the Kroger 1-2-3 Rewards Visa, they can earn an additional 5 cents off the cost of a gallon when they redeem points.  New cardholders can save 25 cents a gallon during their first three months as cardholders when they redeem at least 100 fuel points.

-Customers also receive fuel points on every prescription, see pharmacy for details.

The part about gift cards isn’t really clear. Why was the phrase “to use on gas purchases” included? My understanding was that any gift card purchased at Kroger gives you double points (or quadruple points during THEIR promotion… “our” makes it obvious that this was just copied and pasted from a press release, by the way).

So the days of Kroger having the lowest prices in town on gas are over? I mean it sort of already was (kind of like Sheetz having the lowest prices on gas until gas prices reached a certain level), but the whole reward points structure is being done away with? Yes, it might be convenient to gas up while you’re already there buying groceries, but I think this move will result in a small drop in grocery sales for Kroger and a HUGE drop in the number of people pulling up to their gas pumps. Look out, Sam’s… there’ll be a LOT of customers coming your way as of 1/1/13.

Gonna pick up some Kroger gift cards tonight! Any idea when the Kroger station on Peters Creek at Kroger Corporate will be open?

Aren’t all Kroger gas stations “open” 24/7? My understanding was that like most other stations, the pumps stay on for credit/debit customers even when there’s no one manning/womaning/othering the window.

The “gift cards” thing refers to buying gift cards for various retailers/e-tailers (Barnes & Noble, iTunes, etc.) at Kroger stores (also open 24/7) to accumulate more points than you would if you spent the same amount on groceries. Is that a little more clear?

FYI – this promo does not apply to the “Kroger Family” of gift cards. It won’t earn you extra points to purchase Kroger gift cards!

    Exactly… that’s what I said. It’s just the third-party gift cards.
