Sam’s Hot Dog Stand to open in Roanoke

On Tuesday Sam’s Hot Dog Stand will open a new location at 3305 Brandon Ave. near Dairy Queen in Roanoke.

Sam’s Hot Dog Stand has more than 45 locations in West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky and North Carolina. The hot dog shop already has locations in Salem and Christiansburg.

The hot dog stand’s “claim to fame” is their chili sauce that comes in mild and plain to go along with their beef hotdogs, said Susan Brown, director of operations for Sam’s Hot Dogs.

Oh cool. A hot dog stand within a stones throw of the Roanoke Weiner on Brandon. Not sure why you pick that location???

  3. Hope | September 20, 2012 at 2:35 pm

@peach: Does Roanoke have ANY veggie dogs… ?

Bryan, the same logic as Hometown Family Resturant/Comfort Food opening last week on Brambleton Ave, two doors from Country Cookin.

When will the only real hot dog stand reopen? I am dying to hear Johnny say ” somebody’s gotta be next”.

It’s the Lowe’s philosophy of picking a location; wait until The Home Depot builds, then pick a spot across the street.

  7. Jeff | September 21, 2012 at 8:20 am

I am assuming Steve’s Hot Dogs closed and Sam’s is taking over that spot? Is that right?

  8. david | September 21, 2012 at 8:36 am

jp, both of Lowes stores in Roanoke were built before Home Depot.

Yes, Jeff, Steve’s Famous Hot Dogs closed and this new hot dog stand is moving in at the same location.

@david… Exactly. In fact, Roanoke didn’t even HAVE a Home Depot for decades. Welcome to town, jp!

  11. Spiny Norman | September 21, 2012 at 2:02 pm

…but both of those Lowe’s stores were built near where old Moore’s stores used to be. ;) LOL… not really.

Yea when is the Roanoke Weiner stand going to reopen? I thought it was going to be open by now.

  13. Chris | September 21, 2012 at 4:59 pm

Greg its never going to open until Spiny gets it open and Kritsten waitress’s!!

  14. Keith | September 21, 2012 at 11:43 pm

After it was Steve’s it was AJ’s for over 4 years before they shut down in May.

I’m not a Sam’s fan at all. We have one here in Salem but I never go there. The hot dogs just don’t have any taste! You know you’re eating it but there’s no flavor/spice or whatever… Just IMHO..

Ya’ll can to to the Weiner Stand on Brandon… Same great dog, different location. Johnny was actually sitting in there a couple weeks ago when I stopped in. But, he didn’t yell out “anybody next?”

    #15, agreed.
Tried the new location on Brandon yesterday, same as Salem; no flavor and tepid hot dogs, same tepid chili.
Looks like they would figure it out, but I guess not. If they would ditch the boiled water for the weinies and grill them, they would probably be better.

I tried the new Sam’s on Apperson and really enjoyed it; especially for the money. The spicy chili was really good, and the service was fast even with the line out the door. I never particularly cared for the chili at the Roanoke Weiner Stand, always tasted like it had cinammon or all-spice undertones.

Of course I will always be partial to Skeeters slaw dogs in Wytheville or Dude-Dogs at Dude’s in C-burg…

Steve’s Hot Dogs closed several years ago. Up until earlier this year that location was occupied by AJ’s Restaurant, which had great food but never seemed very busy.

I stopped into AJ’s when they first opened. I placed an order for take out. He served me a hot dog that had been grilling for a long time and was so tough it was uneatable. I took one bite and threw it away and never returned.

If you want the BEST Hot Dog in Roanoke, then head over to Williamson Road and stop at the Richee Freeze. They have the best hot dogs by far.

I work on Brandon Av. near the hot dog stands. I have never cared for the Rke. Weiner Stand. I did love AJ’s and was sad to see them go! I just tried Sam’s today and definitely nothing special…especially at $1.97 a dog with mustard, onions, & chili. I should have gone to the Stop-in on the next block and made my own for 2/$1.

Just stopped in there to get two dogs and fries for my son. The staff were like limp noodles, not friendly at all. The fries were served cold, the cheese sauce was cold and the hot dogs are average. Matter of fact, the dogs at sheetz are better than these.
