Amanda’s back – what’s been on your mind?

Hi Storefront readers, this is Amanda, back from maternity leave. Thanks to Sheila for filling in for me while I was out.

I’ve decided to work part time so I can stay home with my sweet baby girl, so, much like Sheila did I’ll be posting to the blog at least three times a week and will write the Sunday Retail Roundup column. Please understand that because I am working part time I might not be as quick to answer your questions as I was when I was working full time, but I will get to them.

So what’s been on your mind? I’ve been keeping up with the news about the Roanoke Weiner Stand, and the opening of downtown Roanoke’s grocery store. And in Sunday’s Retail Roundup column Sheila wrote about Downtown Soul’s move to Vinton, the expansion of a cupcake shop in Franklin County, a Supercuts opening in Cave Spring and a holistic center that opened this month in Grandin Village. Surely there is more you have been wondering about. Let me know and I’ll get to work!

Welcome back Amanda and thanks for keeping us updated Sheila!

As for questions, the new BP Gas Station/Convenience Store on Plantation right off of 81 is almost completed. There are 2 entrances to the building and the second entrance has it’s own awning. I’m wondering what is going to be in the second part of the building. It kind of looks like an entrance for a restaurant but I haven’t heard anything about an establisment going in that space. Anything you can find would be great!

    Welcome back, missed you!

Welcome back and congratulations, Amanda! Any idea what ever happened to that second PetSmart that was going to open somewhere in town?

  4. Tracy | October 22, 2012 at 9:44 am

What’s the word on the new Tuesday Morning opening at Towers?

  5. Chris | October 22, 2012 at 10:50 am

    Hi Amanda and welcome back!!
Have you heard any info on what type of retail center might be going in along 581 across from Valley View and what new retail options might be coming. From what I hear from the economic directors they are looking at a town center design. Would be great to have new retail such as Banananna Republic, Pottery Barn and William Sonamma. We need stores like this so every one does not have to travel to Richmond and Charlottesville( PB and WS coming in spring there!! And of course Kristen and I want an update on IVY Market.Been awhile. Thanks and welcome back.

The Tuesday Morning at Towers is open. I was there last Friday.

  7. Dennis | October 22, 2012 at 11:04 am

Hi Amanda, and welcome back w/ congratulations from me, too!

I saw a sign over the door of what was Ernie’s Place in Salem. Appears that we may be getting a Mediterranean restaurant here in Salem! Also, my son and I went to “1906 Ale House” the other day, it’s really nice in there! We just had a couple beers but did look over the menu as well. It’s a really nice menu w/ some different items on there. We will surely go back soon to eat. Again, welcome back, glad you will be able to work part time and spend time w/ your daughter!

    Valley View II update?
    Downtown Hotel?

Hahaha is that enough for you? Welcome back ;)

  9. david | October 22, 2012 at 11:31 am

South Peake has been selling condos, according to their website, but you are not allowed to go up there. How’s that working?

  10. Spiny Norman | October 22, 2012 at 11:43 am

Welcome back, Amanda! :) I don’t have any specific questions, just wanted to welcome you back.

  11. Todd | October 22, 2012 at 11:56 am

Any word on the Steak n Shake?

  12. E. Duane | October 22, 2012 at 12:13 pm

The Weiner Stand is closed, right? or have I just not seen it’s relocation?

  13. Kristen | October 22, 2012 at 12:49 pm

Congrats Amanda and welcome back, and thanks to Sheila for filling in for this unruly bunch!

I hope you spent your maternity leave assiduously researching what’s going in at Ivy Market. I’m going into withdrawals with no updates.

  14. Dylan | October 22, 2012 at 12:53 pm

So when are we getting a CheesecakeFactoryDave&Buster’sSteak&ShakeChili’s?

  15. Amanda Codispoti | October 22, 2012 at 1:49 pm

Thanks for the warm welcome back, everyone, and for your questions. I’m making a list!

  16. RP | October 22, 2012 at 2:40 pm

The Weiner Stand is supposed to be moving just around the corner from its old location; there was an article in the newspaper just last week updating people on the status & a dispute with the landlord.

  17. Lindsey Nair | October 22, 2012 at 2:41 pm

@ E. Duane, we ran a front-page article about the Roanoke Weiner Stand in Saturday’s newspaper: http://www.roanoke.com/news/roanoke/wb/315610

  18. Elle | October 22, 2012 at 3:50 pm

Welcome back and uber congrats!! Enjoy your time with your little one!! :)

I, too, am wondering about the old Ukrops area. I’m still sad that I missed it while it was here! But I discovered Fresh Market about a year ago and LOVE it, haha.

Also, for those of you in the NRV, El Rodeo is FINALLY open in the old Famous Anthony’s (among others, lol) in C-burg.

  19. Art Hill | October 22, 2012 at 4:42 pm

Anything on the Magaly taco truck on Plantation Road? It seems to have closed. Thanks and welcome back.

  20. Jay | October 22, 2012 at 9:32 pm

I know you’re getting bombarded Amanda… but the buildings I have questions about are the one going up on Williamson Road where Southern Hills Nursing Home used to be, and the former Lendy’s location on Williamson (was Lendy’s for the car show weekend anyway…) across from the Valero Station. Welcome back!

  21. Eric | October 23, 2012 at 8:29 am

Welcome back! Anything on the frozen yogurt shop that is supposed to open in Bonsack in the Kroger shopping center? It does not look like they have done much.

  22. Marimbist | October 23, 2012 at 8:31 am

Congratulations on the little one! Any word on when the Ulta at Valley View Mall will be opening? Last I heard, it was “some time” in November.

  23. JT | October 23, 2012 at 9:12 am

Downtown Soul Restaurant has relocated to Vinton! The are at the corner of Virginia Avenue and 2nd Street in the space where Nannie’s Restaurant used to be located. Can you do a follow up on them?

  24. JT | October 23, 2012 at 9:12 am

    Welcome Back! :-)

  25. Amanda Codispoti | October 23, 2012 at 10:13 am

@JT: Sheila wrote about Downtown Soul’s move in Sunday’s Retail Roundup column.

  26. Amanda Codispoti | October 23, 2012 at 10:19 am

@Marimbist: Sheila reported that Ulta will have a soft opening Nov. 9, with a grand opening planned for Nov. 16.

  27. barbara | October 23, 2012 at 11:20 am

I was just in Springwood Park and noticed a place called Teriyaki Grill in the space I thought the yougut place was . Any news on this? Welcome back!!

  28. Donna Yeatts | October 23, 2012 at 4:18 pm

Welcome Back! Enjoy the new little one – they grow up so fast! I know you are tired of people asking about Steak & Shake. But how come it wasn’t long after hearing a Cook Out was coming to town that the building suddenly started to spring up; meanwhile the other lot still sits vacant? Incidentally, I didn’t know what a Cook Out was until a couple of weeks ago. We stopped at one in North Carolina on the way to the Talladega race. Good food but I still want my Steak & Shake!!

  29. Amanda Codispoti | October 23, 2012 at 9:52 pm

@Donna Yeatts: Thanks for the welcome back. I’m planning to do an update on Steak ‘n Shake soon so stay posted.

  30. Emily | October 25, 2012 at 9:44 am

Hi Amanda! Olde Salem Mercantile is changing it up quite a bit! They’ve divided their space and Just Dance Roanoke has opened in one half; Rocky Mount’s Kupcakery has opened in the cafe part just last week!

  31. krista | October 25, 2012 at 11:11 am

@Art Hill My husband stopped at their food truck about 2-3 weeks ago and the gentleman informed him he would be closed for a while (maybe a few weeks) because his wife was having a baby. dont know how long until they open up. I hope its soon.

  32. Amanda Codispoti | October 25, 2012 at 11:19 am

    @krista: Thanks for the info!

  33. nellyce McGuire | October 25, 2012 at 1:49 pm

Welcome back. When will Roanoke be getting a camera store? I thought we
were going to get two. I need a camera “fix”. Ritz was always so good about helping novices.

  34. Amanda Codispoti | October 25, 2012 at 4:32 pm

@nellyce: Lee Hartman and Sons sells cameras, as does Photo USA near Towers.

Cardinal Camera was supposed to open at Valley View Mall this fall, but the mall’s general manager, Louise Dudley, told me today that the camera store is no longer planning to open.

  35. Art Hill | October 25, 2012 at 7:08 pm

Thanks, Krista. I’m jonesing for an al pastor. Best of luck to Mama and her new little one!

  36. Amanda Codispoti | October 26, 2012 at 11:49 am

    Thanks Art!

  37. shelly | October 26, 2012 at 2:38 pm

Welcome back Amanda! Any ideas on what’s happening with the old mobile home park behind Honeytree on Plantation Road? It appears that all the trailers are being demolished and removed.

  38. Amanda Codispoti | October 26, 2012 at 2:54 pm

@shelly: I hadn’t seen that. I’ll need to figure out who owns the property and see if I can get in touch with them.

  39. Cindy eades | October 28, 2012 at 12:07 pm

What happened to the French Thistle on Williamson Rd?
Has it moved or just closed. Loved the shop (fabric and upholstery) hope it’s still around.

  40. Amanda Codispoti | October 28, 2012 at 7:40 pm

@Cindy: I haven’t heard anything about it – I’ll put it on my list.

  41. shopping lady 2009 | November 2, 2012 at 6:31 am

Any updates on Thomas Market? Is Tony Thomas going to set up elsewhere?

  42. Amanda Codispoti | November 2, 2012 at 9:05 am

@shopping lady: Center in the Square president Jim Sears has told us that Thomas did not sign a new lease. I’ve tried several times to get in touch with Thomas, with no luck.

  43. William | November 8, 2012 at 12:25 pm

    @Amanda,
Glade to see you back. Thought I would mention that the company I work for is taking a different approach to redeveloping a building in downtown Wytheville.

  44. Amanda Codispoti | November 8, 2012 at 12:40 pm

@William: Thanks! Can’t wait to see what ideas are submitted for the building.

  45. William | November 8, 2012 at 1:08 pm

Would the Storefront help this cause by publishing an article about this?

  46. Amanda Codispoti | November 8, 2012 at 3:52 pm

@William: Unfortunately Wytheville is out of our coverage area, so I likely won’t write about it. But hopefully folks reading this blog will click on the link and check it out.
