Franchisee: Steak ‘n Shake still coming to Roanoke

Many of you have given up hope on Steak ‘n Shake, which announced in July 2011 it would open a restaurant in Roanoke near Crossroads Mall.

According to the franchisee, Steaks of Virginia, the restaurant is still coming. Steaks of Virginia is in the process of applying for a new building permit, Lee Garvin, the franchisee’s director of real estate and development, said this week. (This building permit, filed in 2011, has expired.)

Lee cited the development of other restaurants in the state, including those in Richmond, Virginia Beach and Fredericksburg, as the primary reason for the delay.

Asked when construction might start on the Roanoke restaurant, Lee replied: “As quick as we can.” He wouldn’t give a timeframe.

I checked Roanoke city’s online building permits and as of Thursday afternoon nothing new had been filed for Steak ‘n Shake. I check the building permits regularly, so if/when I see something I’ll let you know.

Meanwhile, food writer Lindsey Nair reported last month on her blog that construction on a Cook Out restaurant has started adjacent from the Steak ‘n Shake site.

Yeah, right. Cook Out will be up and runing and then Steak ‘n Shake will bail.

This isn’t a question about the restaurants. Do you know what has happened to nona nelson, the happy wag column? I miss her blogs!!

  3. Jeffrey | October 26, 2012 at 11:23 am

I’m disappointed that it still hasn’t been built, but as long as they still plan on building it, I will get by. I NEED MY STEAKBURGER FIX!!

  4. Amanda Codispoti | October 26, 2012 at 11:48 am

@betina: Nona hasn’t had time to do the column or blog, and when I talked with her today she said there are no plans to continue either.

I just went to cook out in Danville on Sunday. We only tried the shakes and they were amazing. I had the banana fudge and my cousin got pineapple. He ended up mixing it with a friends orange push up shake and said it was a really good combo. I have never been to a steak ‘n shake though

Was at Tanglewood today. Five Guys already has their menu boards up. When will they open?

  7. maroon01 | October 26, 2012 at 1:57 pm

Amanda, welcome back. We have missed you. Any word on the Bloop in Salem? There has been no movement on the Main Street location since the previous tenant left.

  8. Amanda Codispoti | October 26, 2012 at 2:52 pm

@David: I am checking on Five Guys. Will let you know when I hear back.

  9. Amanda Codispoti | October 26, 2012 at 2:53 pm

@maroon01: I haven’t heard, but I will make a call and see what I can learn.

  10. Amanda Codispoti | October 26, 2012 at 3:07 pm

@Maroon01: Okay, so it is a BTO frozen yogurt shop that we reported would open, not Bloop. But in calling Bloop I found out that they are opening in Vinton by the end of the year. I am waiting to get an address of the new store. I’ll call BTO now…

What happened to Naticakes in Bonsack?

  12. Scott | October 27, 2012 at 11:59 am

Five Guys tweeted me back earlier in the month saying they hope to have it open in November..

  13. Jack | October 27, 2012 at 5:46 pm

    Who cares?

  14. derrick | October 28, 2012 at 6:44 pm

they didn’t give a timeframe for construction because there won’t be any construction. the fact that the new permit could not be found says it all. and yes they will bail because they cannot compete with McDonalds and Cook Out…
also Amanda it still seems like the wing boss is not going to open, any news? thanks

  15. Amanda Codispoti | October 28, 2012 at 7:39 pm

@tjjmom: That’s on my list of things to check. I’ll get back to you.

Why is everyone so negative of Steak n’ Shake coming to Roanoke? Yeah, they have ran into some construction issues, but they say they are still coming to Roanoke. What gain would they have by lying about coming to Roanoke? Steak n’ Shake will be able to compete just fine with any burger place out there, whether it McD’s, Cook Out, Wendy’s, Five Guys, etc.

  17. Arch Burkett | October 28, 2012 at 10:29 pm

Steak ‘n Shake doesn’t compete on that level. Their food is served on plates, and you get silverware.

  18. Spiny Norman | October 29, 2012 at 12:25 pm

Yeah, I completely forgot about WING BOSS. Was planning to get a sandwich at Jimmy John’s a while back and immediately changed my plans when I saw the WING BOSS sign on the back of the building. When I got around to the front… NO WING BOSS! They need to put a “coming soon” banner next to that sign or just remove it if they’re not coming… such a tease! :(

  19. derrick | October 29, 2012 at 8:49 pm

not trying to be negative of steak n’ shake, but the fact they keep saying we’re coming and don’t is deceiving to the public. as far as running into construction issues, they have not moved one piece of dirt yet so there are no construction issues. they probably found out that cook out was coming and can now give a reason for bailing. and when the the new permit wasn’t filed, it is self explanatory. plates and silverware is fine, but for those who have eaten at a cook out, the food is amazing and people will be shocked at the low prices for the quality of food. I’ll take the better food and low price over the silverware. too bad about wing boss. don’t say coming soon until you are really coming soon.

  20. Jeffrey | October 30, 2012 at 4:09 pm

Again I say, what gain would Steak N’ Shake get by lying about coming to Roanoke?

  21. Amanda Codispoti | October 31, 2012 at 11:20 am

@David: Five Guys is aiming to open Tuesday, and if not on Tuesday they will be open sometime next week, per mall spokesman Brad Boothe.

  22. PeterJ | October 31, 2012 at 1:37 pm

@derrick, I believe earlier reports from Amanda indicated that the construction delays were from restaurants being built in Richmond and Fairfax not here.

  23. Amanda Codispoti | October 31, 2012 at 1:48 pm

@PeterJ: You’re right. Thanks for clarifying that for derrick.

  24. derrick | October 31, 2012 at 6:16 pm

yes but again if the new permit has not been filed for, why would they not have done that by now? it may not be that they are lying, but when they bought the land they did not anticipate cook out and not they have an out.

  25. Jeffrey | October 31, 2012 at 8:34 pm

If they aren’t ready to being construction, then why would they need to get a new permit? You can’t compare Cook Out and Steak n Shake because they are totally different concepts.

  26. Jeffrey | October 31, 2012 at 8:34 pm

    begin*

  27. Mike | November 14, 2012 at 8:21 pm

I have an idea Amanda. Tell us when they open and no more updates. It’s ridiculous. Cook out is much better anyway.

  28. Joe | November 27, 2012 at 6:40 pm

Ground has been broken!!!!!!! Cannot wait for Steak and Shake to arrive!!!

  29. doug | January 9, 2013 at 2:37 pm

Anyone know where to apply for a job at Steak and Shakes?

  30. Amanda Codispoti | January 9, 2013 at 2:50 pm

@Doug: I found this ad on Craigslist for a manager at Steak ‘n Shake. Might be a good place to start.

  31. Jeff | January 9, 2013 at 6:00 pm

@Doug: Getting the name right might help in getting the job. Steak ‘n Shake not Steak and Shakes.

  32. doug | January 11, 2013 at 9:28 am

Well aren’t you so special…. Steak ‘n Shake ! Now was that really necessary? God love your heart! Thanks Amanda.

  33. Jeffrey | February 7, 2013 at 9:40 am

Wow, this Mike character sure is bitter about Steak n’ Shake opening in Roanoke.
