Flat Rock Grille, Texas Steakhouse demolished to make room for hotel

The Flat Rock Grille and Texas Steakhouse restaurants at Valley View were torn down this week as a developer gets ready to build a Hampton Inn & Suites.

Once the debris is cleared, workers will import dirt to level the site and put in underground utilities, according to Charlie Byers, general manager of Thomas Properties, the Tennessee-based developer building the hotel.

Byers expects that workers will begin laying the foundation next week.

Construction “will go fairly fast,” Byers said. The 126-room, five-story hotel will open within a year.

A building permit filed in Roanoke values the construction at $10.8 million.

The hotel will sit on about 2.5 acres of land where the restaurants were located. Flat Rock Grille closed in 2008 after the owners filed for bankruptcy. Texas Steakhouse closed October 2011.

on an unrelated note, do you know what is being built on Melrose sort of across the street from Krispy Kreme?

  2. Amanda Codispoti | November 30, 2012 at 11:30 am

@Shelli: I’ll have to look into it.

  3. BigDog | November 30, 2012 at 1:12 pm

The building at Roanoke Salem Plaza will be yet another Dollar General…

  4. Bradley | November 30, 2012 at 1:42 pm

Family Dollar had a sign up a month or so ago across from Krispy Kreme. I would assume that’s what it is.

  5. Amanda Codispoti | November 30, 2012 at 1:50 pm

@shelli: Bigdog and Bradley are correct. It is a Family Dollar store. I wrote about it a few months ago, but it wasn’t until I drove out there today and saw where it was that I remembered.

Isn’t the new downtown hotel also supposed to be a Hampton Inn & Suites? Also, will the construction of this new property have any effect on the Hampton Inn & Suites on Thirlane Rd?

  7. The Other Rick | November 30, 2012 at 2:24 pm

Shame that Family Dollar couldn’t occupy space in the partially empty Roanoke Salem Plaza…instead of building a new building in the parking lot. Seems wasteful to me…but it’s their money…

Does anyone know what is being build on Williamson Road?

  9. Amanda Codispoti | November 30, 2012 at 6:21 pm

@Blue Ridge Foodie: Yes, the hotel proposed for downtown Roanoke is a Hampton Inn & Suites. Here’s a story the paper published in August about it. The hotels are usually franchises (about 98 percent of Hampton properties are franchises, according to the company’s websites) so I don’t think it will an affect on the Hampton Inn on Thirlane.

    @Tim: Where on Williamson Road?

  11. why?????? | November 30, 2012 at 9:05 pm

Another hotel? guess Roanoke is just a huge vacation spot

  12. Mike3 | November 30, 2012 at 10:56 pm

Roanoke needed another hotel group instead of Hampton , something new not in the area to lure business and personal travelers. Not sure who, just saying!!

  13. Mike3 | November 30, 2012 at 10:58 pm

In Rocky Mount area, is the new building next to Sheetz going to be a Taco Bell?

  14. Jenni | November 30, 2012 at 11:40 pm

It is such a shame they tore down that beautiful, hardly used building that flat rock was in. What a waste!

  15. Jack | December 1, 2012 at 7:37 am

I’m curious on the construction on Williamson Road also. It is beginning to look like yet another CVS pharmacy?

  16. CHRIS | December 1, 2012 at 7:58 am

THE BUILDING ACROSS FROM 7-11 WAS ORIGINALLY SUPPOSE TO BE DOLLAR GENERAL BUT THEY LATER DECIDED TO BUILD ON MELROSE MY RELIABLE SOURCES TOLD ME IT IS A DOLLAR TREE AND THATS WHAT CITY RECORDS HAVE !!!

  17. dj | December 1, 2012 at 8:26 am

Tim is asking about the building going up across from the 7-11 near the Liberty Road intersection. Looks like a CVS / Walgreens type building

Hey Amanda! Back in June, you had posted the following article concerning the Kroger gas station on Peters Creek (right off 581).

    http://blogs.roanoke.com/storefront/2012/06/construction-on-kroger-gas-station-to-start-in-july/

In the article, you stated that it “should be open by the middle of October.” However, here we are and it’s beginning of December! I went by there a couple of times in the past couple of weeks and it looks almost ready, but I didn’t know when it’d be open (I REALLY would like to know because it’s not far from my house and would be more convenient than trying to go to the one by Crossroads, where the traffic is kinda crazy). Thanks!!!

  19. Jen | December 1, 2012 at 10:41 am

The new building on Williamson Rd near the gas stations is an urgent care/physician office. I have not clue what’s being built on the other end near the 7/11′s – looks like a garage kind of construction.

  20. dennis | December 1, 2012 at 10:09 pm

those buildings weren’t old. the interior has, err had, lots of nice things inside of them. nearly all of it was reusable and as nice or nicerthan what many people have in their homes, what happens to all of it? is it wasted by being thrown in the trash?

  21. Shelli | December 1, 2012 at 11:39 pm

I think Tim means the building sorta near New Yorker and 7/11 on Williamson Rd, there used to be a nursing home there at one point I believe….I was told that its going to be a Dollar General Market, not sure if that rumor is true or not though!! Thanks you all for the info about whats going in at the Rke/Salem Plaza!!

@Other Kristen: The Kroger fuel center opened a few days ago. I am planning a blog post on that for Monday.

  23. Amanda Codispoti | December 2, 2012 at 8:07 am

@dennis: I believe I saw a lot of that stuff being hauled out before the buildings were torn down. But to be sure, I can ask the developer what they are doing with the materials and get back to you.

  24. Amanda Codispoti | December 2, 2012 at 8:08 am

@Mike3: I’ll call on it Monday and get back to you.

  25. Amanda Codispoti | December 2, 2012 at 8:31 am

Southern Manor Residential and Assisted Living on Williamson Road (across from 7-Eleven) was torn down in 2010 to make room for a Dollar General store. But according to a building permit filed earlier this year, it will now be a Dollar Tree.

  26. Amanda Codispoti | December 3, 2012 at 11:14 am

@Mike3: The new building you saw in Rocky Mount next to Sheetz is for Cook Out. The woman I spoke with in the town’s planning and zoning department told me it might be open by Christmas.

  27. Amanda Codispoti | December 3, 2012 at 11:28 am

@dennis: I talked with Charlie Byers, who works for the development company building the hotel. He said that they salvaged what they could. For instance, the equipment was sold to a local restaurant equipment supplier. They didn’t salvage any building materials, though. Those went to the landfill.

  28. Shelly | December 7, 2012 at 2:12 pm

Do you know what is going in at 5610 Williamson Road? It used to be an empty restaurant for a long time. Thanks!

  29. Amanda Codispoti | December 7, 2012 at 5:16 pm

@Shelly: I will have to call the county on Monday to see what they can tell me. Have you seen work going on there?

  30. Amanda Codispoti | December 10, 2012 at 11:31 am

@Shelly: I’m back with an answer to your question about 5610 Williamson Road. The old restaurant (King Buffet) was demolished. The new building is for MedExpress, an urgent care center, which should be opening soon.

Hi Amanda! Do you know what company will be managing the new Hampton Inn at ValleyView? Or could I possibly get any contact info for Charlie Byers to see if he knows? Thanks!

  32. Amanda Codispoti | February 28, 2013 at 2:07 pm

    @melissab: I will email you.
