Retail Roundup: Updates on Cardinal Camera, Five Guys Burgers and Fries and more

Update: Five Guys Burgers and Fries will open Thursday, according to Tanglewood Mall.

I reported in Sunday’s Retail Roundup column that Five Guys Burgers and Fries will open this week at Tanglewood Mall. Mall spokesman Brad Boothe told me late last week that the restaurant owner is hoping to open Tuesday, and if not Tuesday then sometime later this week.

Also in the column is an update on Cardinal Camera, which had planned to open at Valley View Mall where Optometric World closed. Kurt Seelig, owner of the Pennsylvania-based business, said last week that he changed his plans when he learned that there was a larger space available where Coldstone Creamery was located just across the street from the mall. Valley View Mall has already leased the Optometric World space to another business, B Skinny Cafe, which sells low-glycerin, diabetic and fat-burning products such as teas, shakes, chocolate milk, lattes and thermogenic fat-burning coffee.

You’ll also read in the column about an app called Plurro, which helps organize cash mobs and offers discounts to consumers who “mob” local businesses. The app is being piloted at Virginia Tech and will roll out at 25 other universities in the coming months.

I’ll be back on the blog later this afternoon with an update on Bayou Lucy’s, the new Cajun/Creole restaurant that is opening where Big Lick BBQ closed.

I’ve been wondering about Cardinal Camera. Hadn’t seen or heard anything after your first post on this. Any word on a time line?

@Robert: The owner said it would open early next year.

There is a Smoothie King sign near the ABC Store (good combo) at Towers. Do you know when it will open? I saw on a Google search it is projecting mid-Dec 2012.

@CaineRed: Smoothie King opens Sunday. I am working on getting an interview with the franchisee for an upcoming Retail Roundup column.

@CanineRed: So the corporate office told me Smoothie King would open this weekend, but the franchisee told me Thursday it won’t be until mid to late December.
