Riot Rooster craft show features several local businesses, crafters

Several local businesses and independent crafters will be selling their goods today and Saturday at an indie craft fair dubbed Riot Rooster.

Red Rooster Coffee Roasters, an organic and fair trade coffee company in Floyd, and Baylee’s Best Chocolates, a chocolate shop in Roanoke County, and Frizzante, which produces a carbonated juice drink made in Roanoke, are among the vendors.

Organizer Beth Deel started the event last year after hearing from several crafters who felt that their work didn’t fit in at traditional craft shows which tended to feature holiday or country-style crafts.

“It came about as a way to unite those crafters,” Deel said.

The crafts at Riot Rooster are made from recycled and upcycled items.Shoppers will find handmade jewelry, silkscreened T-shirts, upcycled sweaters, sculptures made from exotic wood, knitted baby hats, scarves and a whole lot more. For a full list of vendors, click here.

The craft show is at The H20 Heater, 813 5th Street SW in Roanoke beginning today from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Another pertinent column for all those folks excited to be able to shop on Thanksgiving day…

Also, I’m seeing ads online for KMart to have special sales at 6:00 a.m., 8:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving day, and then again at 6:00 a.m. on Black Friday. Hey, KMart employees – Happy Holidays! Your management sends you the message loud & clear!

For all those folks who like to chat about how ‘fun & cheerful’ it is to go shopping and force these employees to lose their semblance of a holiday, special thanks to you guys.

Sincere condolences if you’re trapped in that level of Hades to be working for places like KMart, WalMart, etc.

Enjoyed the last Rooster Riot and plan to stop by this one as well.
My son bought a Pac Man wallet made of purple and yellow duct tape which he still uses, and I saw where BB Rierson of Big Bear Guitar Works will have his handmade Canjos on sale for $25 a pop.

I went to this today because I’d seen this blog piece and bought an amazing sweater. Thanks for getting the word out!

I went to Riot Rooster last night and really enjoyed myself. Lots of really neat items at great prices. I hope all of the vendors did well.

@Kristen, @Sarah: Glad to hear that you went. I was there last year and regretted that I didn’t write anything about it beforehand.

Went to Riot Rooster this year – great craft show with unique stuff. Unlike the same old same old!!! Will attend next year too.
