Kroger opens Peters Creek Road fuel center

Kroger has opened another fuel center in the Roanoke Valley, but this one isn’t at a grocery store.
A five-pump, 10 dispenser fuel center at 3635 Peters Creek Road, just off Interstate 581, opened several days ago. It is located outside Kroger’s offices.
The store is likely to catch interstate traffic that otherwise would have traveled farther south on Peters Creek Road to 7-Eleven or Sheetz.
The Kroger fuel center has a small convenience store stocked with drinks, snacks and candy.
Kroger operates 1,141 fuel centers, according to its earning report for the quarter that ended Nov. 3. During that quarter, sales at stores open at least a year increased 3.2 percent. Kroger reported that it earned $316.5 million, or 60 cents per share, for the quarter, up from $195.9 million, or 33 cents per share, the same period last year.

There are mens a-workin’ at the China Success buidling at the intersection of Melrose & Peter’s Creek Road. Just wonderin’ if it’s still gonna be a chinese restaurant or what. . . they have not removed any signage. . .
@Provolone: Thanks! I will check it out!
I was also wondering what’s happening with China Success. Keep us updated! Thanks

I’ve seen some heavy equipment at the site where Steak & Shake is planned. It looks like they have cleaned the dirt lot of all of the accumulated debris.
@Kyle @Provolone: It appears a TitleMax is opening there. I am trying to get more details.
Jeez. Another one?
@Adriane: Steak ‘n Shake broke ground last week. Here’s a blog post with more info.
Just noticed some construction in front of Lowe’s in Salem. Any idea what may be happening? Years of speculation from the locals that this may be an Outback Steakhouse.
Have tried going to Bayou Lucy’s but haven’t been successful. Can you tell me why they have such crazy hours?
Liz, I read on Lindsey’s blog that the owner is a 7th Day Adventist and closes during that Sabbath? Which is apparently sun down Friday to sun down Saturday. I drove by last Friday evening and it was jammed, so I’m not sure what that’s about.
Stacey, I drive by that everyday and have been wondering the same thing…maybe we will get an answer!
@Stacey W: I believe that a few months back the folks at Salem’s planning department told me a bank was being built there. I will call today to see if my memory is any good!
@Liz: When did you try going? Their hours are Monday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday noon to 8 p.m. They are closed Saturdays because the owner is a Seventh Day Adventist, who observes the sabbath from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday.
If you don’t want to work Friday and Saturday nights, the restaurant business just might not be the one for you.
I agree Kristen. I have never heard of a restaurant being closed on Saturday, one of the busiest times for them. Also closing early on Friday, which is also a busy night.
@Stacey W, @Salemite: According to Salem’s department of planning and development the work you’re seeing is the construction of a drive through for a Hometown Bank. (So no walk-in building, just a drive through).
We tried to go Saturday because we don’t eat out that much during the week. Tried to go Monday but a flat tire delayed that option. We will try it eventually. Just see when we can fit it in our schedule and theirs.
What in the world?! How do they reconcile Adventists’ sabbath beliefs with running a cajun restaurant that serves pork, crayfish, and coffee?!
Thank you for the update, Amanda!
Stopped by the Kroger fuel station today … the only coffee they have is a vending machine in the corner with powdered nondairy creamer, and they can’t give you cash back with your debit card.
Either of those things are enough to frustrate travelers who pop off the highway and go there for convenience. I pass there on my daily commute but I’ll just continue to go to 7-11 and Sheetz like before.
@tass: That is too bad about the coffee. It is – or should be – a staple at any convenience store.
Will be interesting how this works out for Kroger. Especially the presumed congestion off of 1-81. Will stop by soon and check it out. Hope they are influential in keeping gas prices on the Peters Creek corridor competitve.Guessing Sheetz will still be a player with their card program and specials, recently the $2 Subs.Ain’t competition grand!!
Amanada, any updates on a suitor for the former Ukrop’s in South Roanoke? A Whole Foods or another grocer perhaps? Also, there is a group called Food City in Abingdon Va. perhaps-Thanks
@Mike3: I am seeking an update on the fate of Ivy Market, the shopping center where Ukrops closed. I reported in this column in April that Whole Foods looked at the site but decided against it. Valley Bank owns the property, and president and CEO Ellis Gutshall has said they would like to see a grocer there because the space is built out for one.
Since whole Foods turned down IVY mARKET MAYBE THE CHARLOTTE DEVEOPER THAT BOUGHT kEAGY WILL GRAB THEM!! AMANDA ANY WORD ABOUT THE OLD FOODLION ON 220. THJAT WOULD BE JUST THE RIGHT SIZE FOR WHOLE FOODS!!
@Chris: I have heard that a discount clothing store is looking at the old Food Lion on U.S. 220, but last time I checked the deal wasn’t done.
What type of discount store Amanda? Intersting that another grocery store would not want it. Did they take out all the food /refridgeration coolers there?
@Chris: I was told a discount clothing store was interested in the building. I don’t know if the coolers are still there or not.
