Retail Roundup: Shoe Show to open in Vinton

A new shoe store is planned to open in Vinton within the next two months.

Shoe Show, which operates stores under the Shoe Show,Shoe Dept.Shoe Dept. Encore and Burlington Shoesnames, is opening a Shoe Show store at Lake Drive Plazawhere Blockbuster Video closed.

Shoe Show, based in Concord, N.C., plans to begin working on the 6,400-square-foot space this week, said Vicki Ayers, a spokeswoman. The company hopes to have the store open in late February or early March if construction goes as planned.

Roger Hypes, director of the company’s real estate division in the Southeast, said Shoe Show has Shoe Dept. and Shoe Dept. Encore stores in the Roanoke and Salem areas, but not a Shoe Show store. The company chose the space on Hardy Road because it is near a Kroger and a Dollar Tree store, which generate a lot of traffic, Hypes said.

The store will carry more than 13,000 pairs of shoes, handbags and accessories.

I have a nit to pick with Wayne Loomis. Hallmark products were sold in stores other than drug stores well before 1979. My parents opened a Hallmark card shop in suburban Pittsburgh (Coraopolis) in 1960 and ran it until they retired in 1987. There was a full line of Hallmark cards, all the seasonal cards, Hallmark wrapping paper, gift wrap, and ribbon, plus all the party supplies (plates, cups, napkins, those paper honeycomb fold-out centerpieces, etc.). The store also carried paperback books, magazines, gifts, and stationary supplies (Dad was the go-to guy for a variety of ballpoint pen refills). A Hallmark salesman made regular calls to promote new lines and items. Perhaps the difference was that this was a “franchise” store rather than a company-owned store, but it did exist well before 1979.

Amanda, do you have any information on the old Winn Dixie building on Plantation Rd? They have taken all of the for sale signs down.

@NCO: I’ll check on that. Haven’t heard anything until you mentioned it.

I’m so glad someone is finally making use of the old Blockbuster building. I was a bit disappointed to see that someone put up a new building in the parking lot right in front of a perfectly good existing space.

Bruce, what in the heck are you talking about, and how does it relate to this article?

  7. Amanda Codispoti | January 21, 2013 at 11:56 am

@Spiny: Bruce is talking about another part of the column – the owner of a Hallmark store who is looking to sell his business. Click the link in this post to read more.

Wish they’d put a nice name brand outlet store there instead of a cheap shoe store. A person has to drive out of State to find any good outlets.

  11. Amanda Codispoti | January 22, 2013 at 12:24 pm

@Chris: My source at Thalhimer said the sign was put up prematurely. I was by there today and it looked like the sign was down, but it might not be long until it is back up. As for the old Food Lion building on U.S. 220, the real estate agent selling that building said he may have some news in late February.

There is also a Bloop opening right next to the Vinton Kroger, on the left, next to Cost Cutters and Big Lots.
