The wait for those hand-dipped milkshakes and steak burgers is almost over.

Construction on Roanoke’s Steak ‘n Shake restaurant at Crossroads Mall is coming along. The shell of the building is standing, though some work remains to be done on the exterior. If the weather doesn’t cause any trouble, the restaurant should be open in early March, according to the franchisee.

Roanokers have been waiting on the restaurant to open since the summer of 2011, when it was announced that the franchisee Steaks of Virginia would build the restaurant in Roanoke. The project, however, was delayed by other Steak ‘n Shake openings elsewhere in Virginia. Construction on the Roanoke restaurant started in late November.

Lee Garvin, the franchisee’s director of real estate and development, didn’t want to give an exact opening date because he said the weather might put them behind.

“It’s tough to build in the winter,” he said. “We’re looking forward to getting it open.”

Steak ‘n Shake is holding interviews daily at a trailer at the construction site. A Craigslist ad says the restaurant is hiring for cashiers, host/hostess, dishwashers, servers, shift supervisors and more.

The owner of mcdonalds that sits between this place and the other burger joint is gonna be sweating his income soon.

The Steak and Shake building looks like it is almost 2 stories high?

Finally, a legacy to leave my son. I’ve long lamented that he would grow up in a city without a Steak’n'Shake, living an inferior life of blue-ribbon burger bereavement.
Often times we’ve driven through larger cities with Steak’n'Shakes as far as the eye can see, and my son would stare in wide eyed wonder at the marvels of modern burgery.
Roanokers rejoice, for we have arrived!

So for you burger afficanados who have dined at both Stake N Shake and Cook Out, which is your preference? Cook Out is pretty good, but I like Richee Freeze better, especially for the hot dogs.

IMHO, Cook Out is good but Steak B Shake is better.

Steak n Shake is 10 times the burger that Cook Out puts out. There is nothing in this world like a steakburger from Steak n Shake. They don’t have the massive selection of milkshake flavors that Cook Out does, but they are just as good, if not better.

For heaven’s sake, if you’re that hungry for one, drive down to Greensboro and knock yourself out. They have two of them.

Just had my third and last bad experience at Cookout, burned rings, cup full of ice. Looking forward to S&S.

Maybe not exactly Storefront topic, but what the heck is going on with Dish Network and Fox 21 27 owners. Dish has dropped broadcast of 21 27. I missed last nites broadcast from Daytona and I’m not real happy about the way both parties are completely ignoring their customers / viewers best interests

It’s great that we have these new restaurants but building them side by side is a bit stupid.

I’ve only been to Cookout once. Ordered the bbq. Nowhere did it say it came with coleslaw; they didn’t ask if I wanted coleslaw; the bbq was more coleslaw than bbq. I threw it out and haven’t looked back. Dis-gus-ting! I’ve also only been to a Steak-n-Shake once. Got some kind of steak wrap. Paid about $9. Probably won’t be back there, either. #debbiedowner

I’ve visited the cookout many times! It’s the best deal in Roanoke for the amount of food you get for just over 5.00. The restaurant is always clean and the staff is super friendly! Steak and shake is much more expensive
