It wasn’t too long ago that I reported the opening dates of several new dollar stores in the area.
Now we can add one more store to the list.
Dollar General is building a new store in the 1300 block of Jamison Avenue in southeast Roanoke on a site that was formerly a used car lot.
The store will be 7,300 square feet and is scheduled to open this fall, said Dan MacDonald, spokesman for the company.
The store is about two miles from the new Dollar General store on Garden City Boulevard that opened about a year ago.
I asked MacDonald why the company is opening a store so close to an existing store.
“Obviously business is growing rapidly and we are opening lots of new stores,” MacDonald said. He said the company looks at several factors, such as traffic flow and demographics, when considering a location.
“Oddly enough, we have two stores near each other in several cities and both do well,” he said.
He added that it takes about 5,000 people, or 1,400 families, to support each store.
The Jamison Avenue store will employ six to 10 people, MacDonald said.
Dollar General announced earlier this year its plans to open its 11,000th store by the end of the year.
The Goodlettsville, Tenn. company earned $317.4 million, or 97 cents per share, in the fourth quarter that ended on Feb. 1. That’s up from $292.5 million, or 85 cents per share, the same time period last year. Sales at stores open at least a year were up 3 percent.
Do you think dollar stores can maintain their growth rate?
