A group of stores and restaurants located near Roanoke College in Salem is trying to brand the area in an effort to draw together the business community and attract attention from customers.
Plantagenet Rose Interiors and Gift Boutique owner Gwenda Kellett has dubbed the area near the intersection of College Avenue and East Main Street “College Corners.” (She is also the proponent behind the “Shop Salem First” slogan.)
“It kind of gets overlooked,” Kellett said of the area. “We just needed something to identify the area.” Her store, on College Avenue, moved to Salem in 2011.
The area has undergone some changes in the past few months.
A pizza shop, Lucky’s, serving 28-inch pies opened two weeks ago; Elderberry’s has reopened in a larger space; and Pampered and Polished, a salon and boutique relocating from Apperson Drive, opened earlier this month.
