The former Schewels furniture store on Williamson Road in Roanoke is undergoing work in preparation for at least two new retailers.
The building at 2811 Williamson Road, across the street from the New York Delicatessen, is being divided to accommodate up to four businesses, said Mike Sutton, property manager.
Two of the newly-created spaces have already been leased, Sutton said.
Easy Home, a rent-to-own furniture, appliance and electronics franchise will open Nov. 2, said franchisee Jerry Marshall.
Marshall opened his first Easy Home three years ago in Lynchburg. Other franchisees have opened locations in Richmond and Bristol.
The 4,000 square-foot store in Roanoke will carry furniture, name-brand appliances and electronics including televisions, Blu-ray players, computers and tablets.
Marshall has also signed a lease to open a mattress store at the building, he said. That store won’t open for four to six months, he said.
Those two stores will take up the right half of the building, Sutton said. The other half, about 16,000 square feet, is available through Thalhimer for lease.
The building hasn’t had a permanent retailer since 2008, when Schewels relocated to a 55,000 square-foot space on Ferncliff Avenue in Roanoke.
Calvin Powers, owner of the Williamson Road property, decided to divide up the building because few retailers need a building as big as the old Schewels building, Sutton said.
