Lindsey Thompson: floor-length rompers, West Main Street, Christiansburg

Name: Lindsey Thompson

What influences your personal style? “I look up to my older sister for style tips and I get a lot of inspiration from Nicole Richie.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “My romper.”

Where to get it : Urban Outfitters

Occupation: Counselor

Age: 23

Location: West Main Street, Christiansburg

Date: Wednesday, May 2, 2012

Time: 5:23 p.m.

What caught my eye: I spend a lot of time in downtown Christiansburg during my off time, and for the most part, it’s pretty sleepy with little to no foot traffic. Lindsey was a refreshing change of scenery. I loved how her romper frames her silhouette so well. Standing still, her floor-length romper looks almost like a maxi dress — very cute outfit.

Serena Matuk: a hat worth wearing, Daleville Town Center

Name: Serena Matuk

What influences your personal style? ” I just wear what I like.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “My hat.”

Where to get it: “I got it at a vendor at FloydFest last year.”

Occupation: School counselor in Floyd

Age: 25

Location: Daleville Town Center, Daleville

Date: Saturday, April 28, 2012

Time: 4:05 p.m.

____________

What caught my eye: I don’t wear them as often as I once did, but I’m a hat person. I believe it should fit well and flatter your look and still serve the purpose of blocking out the sun.

Serena wore her fedora very well; the band and added ribbon gave it that feminine touch so fitting for spring.

Alison Firich: She stops traffic, literally. Drillfield Drive, Virginia Tech

Name: Alison Firich

How would you describe your personal style? “My day-to-day style is pretty laid back and casual, but I love accessorizing and keeping up with the latest styles.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “I liked how my earrings and necklace paired with my dress.”

Where to get it: ” The dress, necklace, and earrings are from Forever 21.”

Occupation: Graduating fashion and merchandising major at Virginia Tech.

Age: 22

Location: Drillfield Drive, Virginia Tech

Date: Friday, April 27, 2012

Time: 4:57 p.m.

____________

What caught my eye: What didn’t! When I was up shooting street style in New York this past January, a strange phenomenon would happen on the sidewalks of midtown Manhattan. The crowds would part like the Red Sea, making a public runway for whichever blindingly beautiful fashion goddess was making her way at that moment.

Ali reproduced this effect on the campus of Virginia Tech, literally stopping traffic as I was taking her photo. Her outfit was stunning, she’s stunning and she’s about to be a college grad — her parents have a lot to be proud of.

Peggy Dill: pretty in pink, Church Avenue, Roanoke

Name: Peggy Dill

How would you describe your personal style? “I’m eclectic and experimental with my fashion, I haven’t quite made up my mind.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? ” My purse for sure.”

Where to get it: “I actually got everything I’m wearing today from Erstwhile Wardrobe in Roanoke.”

Occupation: Planning adviser for Carilion.

Age: 53

Location: Church Avenue, Roanoke

Date: Friday, April 27, 2012

Time: 12:40 p.m.

_____________

What caught my eye: Peggy is blond, stylish and not 25, it was a no brainer. Her purse was very different as well, kind of reminds me of the small train cases ladies traveled with on the railroad during the mid-century.

May:not really sure what to expect

After a very strange April, I’m not sure what to expect on the street style front. Weather dictates what people wear so much, when it isn’t consistent neither is the fashion.  Aside of that, the women of Southwest Virginia are sucking it up, and sticking to their spring uniform of mostly skirts and dresses no matter what the temperature is. The men on the other hand haven’t decided what to do just yet, maybe towards the end of the month we will see the gents and mother nature get their act together.

Rachel DeLauder: mixed colors for spring or fall, Kent Street, Blacksburg

Name: Rachel DeLauder

What influences your personal style? “I actually like reading street style blogs like The Sartorialist.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “I like the mix of colors on my dress.”

Where to get it : Some thrift store in Kentucky.

Occupation: Managing Editor/Communication and marketing at Virginia Tech

Age: 29

Location: Kent Street, Blacksburg

Date: Tuesday, April 24, 2012

Time: 6:50 p.m.

What caught my eye: Rachel’s dress felt like a little bit of fall and spring mixed together. The colors of her scarf, cardigan and purse just went together so well.

Laith Nuqul: collegiate gentleman, Old Turner Street, Blacksburg

Name: Laith Nuqul

How would you describe your wardrobe? “Really clean, very bold pieces.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “My sports coat.”

Where to get it : Massimo Dutti

Occupation: Architectural design student at Virginia Tech

Age: 21

Location: Old Turner Street, Blacksburg

Date: Tuesday, April 24, 2012

Time: 6:14 p.m.

____________

What caught my eye: This crazy spring weather has people layering up like it was fall again — or winter depending on how you look at it. I was digging the patchwork on Laith’s sports coat, but there were so many nice details, you’ll just have to dig a bit to see them all. This was an exceptionally well-executed outfit for a 21-year-old, a look you likely might find more in Italy. It’s refreshing to see in Blacksburg.

Rebecca Knicely: fashionable fashion journalism student on Virginia and East Main streets, Radford

Name: Rebecca Knicely

What influences your personal style? “I take it by the day, but I get one simple piece and build my outfit around it.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “I really like my necklace.”

Where to get it: Charlotte Russe

Occupation: Fashion journalism student at Radford University

Age: 20

Location: Virginia and East Main streets, Radford

Date: Wednesday, April 11, 2012

Time: 3:12 p.m.

____________

What caught my eye: Rebecca gave shape to her loosely fitted shirt dress by cinching it down with her belt. For an already brightly colored outfit, her necklace actually popped out with the silver and turquoise colored pendant.

Peter Nguyen: slim cut with no break, Drillfield Drive, Virginia Tech

Name: Peter Nguyen

How would you describe your personal style? “I like to read a lot of GQ magazine, I like skinny ties and form-fitting clothes. I’m also not big on color — blacks, grays and whites are my go-to colors.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “My black Cole Haan cap-toe dress shoes. ”

Where to get it : Cole Haan

Occupation: Electrical engineer student at Virginia Tech

Age: 20

Location: Drillfield Drive, Virginia Tech

Date: Friday, March 30, 2012

Time: 4:03 p.m.

_____________

What caught my eye: I’m sure you’re thinking Peter’s shoes were the deal maker here. Well, they are nice, I own a pair myself.

Actually, it was the break in Peter’s slacks that I liked. He is wearing slim-cut pants that always look their best when you have them hemmed with no break. Another way to say this; pants that almost look like “high waters.”

With a narrow leg openings, no break gives a nice lengthening effect and shows off your shoes, well worth the shortened inseam.

Alexandra Frazier: floral fabric and shades of green, in front of Lee Chapel, Washington & Lee University

Name: Alexandra Frazier

What influences your personal style? “I like to incorporate classic things I can invest in and still wear 10 to 20 years from now. Something timeless but with a little funk!”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “I love my dress because of the fabric.”

Where to get it: “I got it at a small boutique called Envii in Lexington, S.C.”

Occupation: Student/president of the Panhellenic Council at W&L

Age: 20

Location: In front of Lee Chapel, Washington & Lee University

Date: Wednesday, March 28, 2012

Time: 5:12 p.m.

____________

What caught my eye: Alexandra’s ponytail pulled her hair out of the way for me to easily see those great looped hoop earrings.

Followed by that wonderful shade of green and the floral patterned fabric, Alexandra’s outfit is a great look to welcome spring in Lexington.

About Style Street

Welcome to The Roanoke Times' Style Street blog where I, David Verde, will share my street fashion finds from around Southwest Virginia.

How do I do it? I go on a walk with my camera, and when I find people I think look stylish or unique, I stop them and ask if I can take their picture. Although people can be hesitant, nervous and sometimes blush, most say yes.

I make regular visits to Lexington, Blacksburg, Roanoke, Radford, Lynchburg and Friday night jamborees in Floyd. If you see me out, feel free to say hi and pose.

Email me anytime, and follow me on Twitter and Facebook. Read more about Angel David Verde.
