New additions to Style Street
The past seven months of Style Street have been great. It seems every time I hit the streets, more people know what I’m up to. The past few weeks, I’ve been chatting with features editor Kathy Lu on some new ideas to implement this year.
The first addition comes from reader comments asking where people got different items for their outfits. I’ll now be asking my subjects what they consider their outfit’s “signature piece” and where they got it from. Hopefully, this means if you see something you must have in a post, you’ll know where to look for it.
The second addition I’ll be making this month will be an introduction describing what caught my eye in a particular outfit. There is so much happening when I’m shooting street styles, and often I have very little time to react before that person walks away or gets in a car. So when something catches my eye, I move quickly to stop them for a photo. I hope to give readers a little insight into what I saw, or what was going on in my head just before I stopped that person to snap a photo.

David, I love looking at your blog and seeing all the great fashion and style you find in other cities, like Charleston, Savannah, etc.
That being said, a lot of the people in downtown Roanoke seem to be lackluster.
Have you thought about going to different neighborhoods, especially Grandin? It’s a little more artsy over there, and I’ve seen some fabulous outfits.

Darn, I was hoping you’d actually add non-thrift store style to the blog. Maybe that’s a 2013 goal.

David, I look forward to seeing the Style Street features, and these improvements sound like they will make it even more fun- especially knowing where people find their standout items.

Is it just me or do none of the photos appear?

I actually have to agree with Suz. As a big critic of yours I have to say the most frustrating thing is probably that your OWN website shows far more interesting, fashionable people with a wider variety of styles (and I actually LIKE browsing it)…while what you post here from Roanoke and Blacksburg is flat and repetitive. I like Suz’s suggestion of trying other areas…definitely need more variety stylistically.

@Suz and Jessie, I truly wish I had a good answer for you when it comes to fashion in Roanoke and Blacksburg. One key thing to remember is what part of Virginia we live in. There are some people who’s style challenge the best of SoHo NYC, but style in SWVa as a whole I feel is still very conservative.
The next factor to consider is, foot traffic in our area is painfully unpredictable. I’ve visited ever town and city from as far north as Lexington to as far South as Radford, as of yet Have I figured out a pattern that is consistent. I agree, I would love to snap a photo in Grandin, but often when I visit I’m the one person walking around.
Do remember, I can encounter more people walking down one block in Richmond, Charleston SC, or NYC then i would walking around for an hour in Roanoke or Blacksburg. I rely on people on the town walking the streets. As more people start heading out and staying out in our area, the more divers styles I’ll be able to feature here on Style Street.

Very happy you are starting a “where to buy it” feature!

Hi David! This may or may not be something you can help with but I saw a trenchcoat on a TV show the other day that I loved. I would like to be able to find where it came from and buy one if possible I but have no idea how to go about looking for it. Do you have any ideas of how people can find some of the fashions they see on TV? Thanks!
