Maggie Morgan: red-violet velvet, Salem Avenue, Roanoke

Something you would never been caught wearing? “Crocs and those 5-finger shoe things.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “My scarf, I wear it with everything.”

Where to get it: Goodwill

Occupation: Waitress/student

Age: 19

Location: Salem Avenue, Roanoke

Date: Wednesday, December 19, 2012

Time: 4:20 p.m.

——————-

What caught my eye: Where do I start? Red-violet colored velvet dress, black micro fishnet tights, frayed booties, add some attitude with a leather coat, scarf, finished off with a small topknot hair-do and evening-ready makeup. Oh, and she’s gorgeous.

Sonya Chappelear: layers in tan on Market Street, Roanoke

Location: Market Street, Roanoke

Date: Wednesday December 19, 2012

Time: 3:14pm

——————-

What caught my eye: Fun layers and the right choice of neutral colors caught my eye here. Black and gray is great but very predictable in the winter months. Camel, tan and browns are good color alternatives when you aren’t going for a full on color pop.

Caitie Mulligan: taking on the rain, South Main Street, Blacksburg

Name: Caitie Mulligan

Something you would never be caught wearing? “Uggs, leggings and a North Face fleece coat as an outfit.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “My vest, I got it a boutique while vacationing at Rehoboth Beach in Delaware.”

Occupation: Architecture design student at Virginia Tech

Age: 20

Location: South Main Street, Blacksburg

Date: Sunday, December 16, 2012

Time: 1:34 p.m.

——————-

What caught my eye: I seldom head out in rainy conditions, because Southwest Virginia turns into one large ghost town when the weather is poor.

Downtown Blacksburg however was bustling with students cramming for their last exams of the semester.  I started looking for people not letting the rain cramp their style and stumbled on Caitie.

I liked how she layered casual wear into a not so casual rainy afternoon look. I’m glad I took my camera out with me today.

Marie Webb: blacks and grays, Jefferson Street, Roanoke

Name: Marie Webb

What is something you’ve owned the longest? “I have a vintage sweater probably from the ’50s, it was my mother’s when she was younger and now I have it.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “My shoes.”

Where to get it: Yarid’s in Roanoke

Occupation:  Senior Director Planning & Community Outreach at Carilion

Age: 53

Location: Jefferson Street, Roanoke

Date: Wednesday, December 5, 2012

Time: 12:13 p.m.

——————–

What caught my eye: I was turning the corner from Kirk Avenue when I saw Marie, saw her shoes, looked up at her lovely gray cape, and stopped her in her tracks.

I usually don’t pull the trigger on asking for a photo that fast, but with Marie I didn’t even hesitate.

Date: Saturday, December 1, 2012

Time: 4:00 p.m.

——————-

What caught my eye: RJ’s plaid shirt was a great match with his slim jeans and deck shoes, I actually had to run about three blocks to catch up to him. The gold necklace was a nice addition also.

Alex Vann: heirloom style, Draper Road, Blacksburg

Name: Alex Vann

Who is your style icon?: “My brother, he has given me a lot of my style.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece?: “My jacket, my dad got it when he was a student in Italy.  It’s starting to tear in some places but I’m pretty loyal to it still.”

Age: 23

Location: Draper Road, Blacksburg

What caught my eye: Alex was the last of five photos I took on the 14th, five street style photos in one day just doesn’t happen around here. Can we say best day ever! His style is great, heavy layers in the brown color family, a hint of blue, and I love a solid pair wingtip brogues even if they are distressed.

Tristan De Vega: business standards, Franklin Road, Roanoke

——————–

What caught my eye: I’m with Tristan, pleated slacks and cuffs need to go, Roanoke. We got more popped collars on those winter coats, and Tristan keeps it fun with his colorful argyle socks. Head-to-toe this is a smart look.

What caught my eye: In my early 20’s when I lived in Charleston SC, girls were really into leg warmers. There’s something fun and cute about them and Sarah wore them well with those black rose patterned tights.

Brian Redd: pop’n in camel, Jefferson and Kirk, Roanoke

Age: 35

Location: Jefferson and Kirk, Roanoke

Date: Wednesday, November 14, 2012

What caught my eye: Brian is definitely taking cues off Kanye, that camel color double breasted topcoat demands attention and sartorial respect. A popped coat collar doesn’t just keep the cold air off your neck; it adds some attitude to your winter wear. Pop your collar guys, it’s fun!

About this blog

Welcome to The Roanoke Times' Style Street blog where I, David Verde, will share my street fashion finds from around Southwest Virginia.

How do I do it? I go on a walk with my camera, and when I find people I think look stylish or unique, I stop them and ask if I can take their picture. Although people can be hesitant, nervous and sometimes blush, most say yes.

I make regular visits to Lexington, Blacksburg, Roanoke, Radford, Lynchburg and Friday night jamborees in Floyd. If you see me out, feel free to say hi and pose.

Email me anytime, and follow me on Twitter and Facebook.
