Christina Hatch: Orange with a cross, Market Street, Roanoke

christina hatch 400 fullName: Christina Hatch

How would you describe your personal style? “Classic, but I do like a flirty shoe.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “My orange pants.”

Where to get it: Talbots

Occupation: Chief development officer for The American Red Cross

Age: 49

Location: Market Street, Roanoke

Date: Tuesday, May 14, 2013

Time: 12:34 p.m.

——————-

What caught my eye: I thought Christina’s look was a great mix of classic neutrals with that added pop of orange. Surprisingly, I decided to stop her because I liked the cross pin on her cardigan; I didn’t realize she was just representing the Red Cross in her wardrobe. Just a great spring look here.

Matt Nulf: Bowtie Tuesday, Salem Avenue, Roanoke

Matt nulf 400 full

What caught my eye: This is what I have once called the “prep uniform.” It’s a good go-to look that almost every guy can pull off. The pink flamingos on the bowtie and matching gingham pocket square is really the centerpiece of this look. matt nulf 400 pocket matt nulf 400 head

Waqar Shah: influences by stylish friends, Kent Street, Blacksburg

Waqar full 400 Name: Waqar Shah

Who influences your personal style? ” My friends Nathan and Ian are big influences. Nathan really got me into thrifting and Ian has taught me to have a cleaner look.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “My scarf, I found it at the Goodwill.”

Occupation: Forestry student at Virginia Tech

Age: 21

Location: Kent Street, Blacksburg

Date: Saturday, April 27, 2013

Time: 12:47 p.m.

——————-

What caught my eye: Waqar’s outfit looks very similar to something I wear quite often, casual but still chic and masculine. I like that a Style Street alum — Nathan Skylar Friedlander from 2011 — is one of his style influences. A plus for this outfit.  Waqar shoes 400waqar headshot 400

Fitzroy Montgomery: individual style sense, Market Street, Roanoke

Fitzroy 400 full Name: Fitzroy Montgomery

Date: Friday, April 26, 2013

Time: 5:36 p.m.

What caught my eye: I’m not sure I can put Fitzroy into any set style or trend, I think it’s safe to say he has great individual style. Fitzroy was a welcomed find.Fitzroy 400 coat back

Caroline Rudolph: daytime glam, West Main Street, Christiansburg

Caroline full 400Name: Caroline Rudolph

Who is your style icon? “Kate Moss, Rachel Bilson and Blake Lively.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “Definitely my Trouve denim button down, I love casual layering on dressier pieces.”

Occupation: Student at Virginia Tech

Age: 23

Date: Saturday, April 20, 2013

Time: 4:12 p.m.

—————–

What caught my eye: I’m not sure how else to put it, but Caroline’s outfit is one very sexy outfit.

Casual, but sexy. Her waxed jeans, booties and Louis Vitton bag add some daytime-friendly glam to her look. The loose-fittingCaroline bag 400 denim top, tank and peeking black lace bustier anchor down this hot ensemble. Caroline shoes 400

Christian Falyar: vested up, Campbell Avenue, Roanoke

Christian full 400Name: Christian Falyar

How would you describe your style? “My kids say I dress like Simon Baker in ‘The Mentalist.’”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “My vest.”

Age: 45

Location: Campbell Avenue, Roanoke

Date: Friday, April 19, 2013

—————–

What caught my eye: Most vest wearers I see around our area seem to be going for more of a contemporary look. Christian looked very sophisticated in this tweed vest, tie and navy slacks. Christian head 400

Laura Pineda-Fischer: not tied to the status quo, Kirk Avenue, Roanoke

Laura full 400Name: Laura Pineda-Fischer

What influences your personal style? “I want to make clothing for an androgynous scene. There are some shops online that are doing it but they are really expensive. So doing that but more affordable is an interest for me.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “My tie.”

Where to get it: Erstwhile Wardrobe

Occupation: Art student at Hollins University

Age: 20

Location: Kirk Avenue, Roanoke

Date: Tuesday, April 9, 2013

Time: 6:50 p.m.

———————

What caught my eye: The idea of women wearing men’s fashion is far from new. Madonna is one celebrity who has rocked this look.

There is a level of ambiguity in this sort of look, the kind that, to me, takes a load of confidence. Laura wasn’t short of confidence and her outfit was on point. If she can pull this off, in my opinion she can pull off any look she wants.

Ana Ellis: making colors pop with contrast, Campbell Avenue, Roanoke

Ana full 400Name: Ana Ellis

What’s something you would never be caught wearing? : “Leggings as pants.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece?: “My dress.”

Where to get it : Mad Dog

Occupation: Account executive at Modea

Age: 24

Location: Campbell Avenue, Roanoke

Date: Tuesday April 9, 2013

Time: 6:37pm

——————

What caught my eye: The weather got warm quite fast, but it is spring after all so layering is still a must.  The contrast in color of Ana’s turquoise cardigan really made her red dress pop. This is a great Ana shoes 400example of a no frills, spring look.Ana bag 400  Ana face 400

Caitlin Mitchell: spring lace dress, Salem Avenue, Roanoke

caitlin 400 fullName: Caitlin Mitchell

How would  you describe your personal style? “I’m from Cape Cod, so I’m usually very preppy. I’d say now that I live in Virginia I’m more Southern prep.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “My dress.”

Where to get it: J Crew

Occupation: Creative coordinator at Neathawk Dubuque and Packett

Age: 22

Location: Salem Avenue, Roanoke

Date: Tuesday April 9, 2013

Time: 6:15 p.m.

——————

What caught my eye: Jean jackets are a great way to dress down a semi-formal look, her sandals keep it simple as well. Ditching the jean jacket and a simple change in shoes would change this whole look completely. Caitlin’s dress is a versatile wardrobe piece, which are the best kind to shop for.

Dan Estabrook: punk vs. geek style, Kirk Avenue, Roanoke

dan full 400Name: Dan Estabrook

What influences your personal style? “Definitely … 19th century dandyism, but a little punk rock, so the styles fight each other. It’s like punk vs. geek. “

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “The coat.”

Where to get it: Amarcord Vintage Fashion in Williamsburg (Brooklyn, New York)

Occupation: Artist-in-residence at Hollins University

Age: 44

Location: Kirk Avenue, Roanoke

Date: Saturday, March 16, 2013

Time: 4:46 p.m.

What caught my eye: Well-dressed men are hard to find in Roanoke, at least when I’m feeling picky. Dan had that well put-together casual look I dig — the kind of casual when men no longer keep baggy pants and T-shirts in the closet as much as dress shoes, button-downs and sport coats. dan full shoes 400 dan 400 head

About this blog

Welcome to The Roanoke Times' Style Street blog where I, David Verde, will share my street fashion finds from around Southwest Virginia.

How do I do it? I go on a walk with my camera, and when I find people I think look stylish or unique, I stop them and ask if I can take their picture. Although people can be hesitant, nervous and sometimes blush, most say yes.

I make regular visits to Lexington, Blacksburg, Roanoke, Radford, Lynchburg and Friday night jamborees in Floyd. If you see me out, feel free to say hi and pose.

Email me anytime, and follow me on Twitter and Facebook.
