What caught my eye: At first glance, Hillary’s outfit is mostly blacks and grays. Once I took a second look, I noticed a subtle touch of purple under her coat, and her brown purse gave a nice added mix of neutrals. What stands out to you in Hillary’s look?hillary 400 boots

Nicole Buszius: cute look on a chilly day, First Street, Roanoke

What caught my eye: The word cute sometimes doesn’t have the same power as gorgeous, lovely, beautiful or fabulous.  However, I can’t really find another word to describe Nicole’s look.

It’s a really cute outfit all for the right reasons. Her coat has a great feminine shape, it pairs nicely with her slim jeans. Her purple gloves and hat bring form and functionnew ss photo shoes 400 to the look, giving this casual outfit a nice girly touch on a chilly day.

What do you think of this outfit? Is cute the right word?

Erin Hildreth: stripes and spirals, Campbell Avenue, Roanoke

Erin full feb - 400Name: Erin Hildreth

Who is your style icon?  “I love Heidi Klum’s style. Just as glamorous in sweats as she is in sequins.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece?  “My boots. Specifically the contrast of black tights with brown boots. I saw the boots in a boutique in NYC this summer & just HAD to have them. ”

Occupation: Executive director of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals

Age: 30

Location: Campbell Avenue, Roanoke

Date: Friday, February 1, 2013

Time: 1:28 p.m.

——————-

What caught my eye: Erin’s outfit was just fantastic. I think anyone brave enough to wear a white coat has added style points in my book.

I loved the texture her stripes-and-spiral tights gave her outfit, and her tan boots were a causal addition to the whole look. Erin boots feb - 400

Donna Rhodes: high-collared coat for low temps, Campbell Avenue, Roanoke

Donna feb full 400Name: Donna Rhodes

What is something that you would never be caught wearing? “A full length down coat, and broomstick skirts.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “My red coat.”

Where to get it: Macy’s

Occupation: Human resources business director

Age: 44

Location: Campbell Avenue, Roanoke

Date: Friday, February 1, 2013

Time: 1:27 p.m.

What caught my eye: If the low temperatures weren’t bad enough, the wind made Friday almost unbearable.

Donna braved the cold with only sheer tights. Her boots probably helped a bit, but it was her lovely high-collared red coat that looked the warmest, adding some much needed color to such a grim day.Donna feb boots 400

Kay Strickland: warm in black on Kirk Avenue, Roanoke

street style and fashion in roanoke virginia. Womens winter fashion via The Roanoke Times - Style Street with David VerdeName: Kay Strickland

What influences your personal style? “I tend to go for classic, sophisticated looks … Jackie O, Princess Kate … if I only had their bank accounts.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “I dressed around the boots this morning. To be honest, the higher heels hurt if you have to walk too long in them, but I love them any way!”

Where to get it: “I got them online, though I think that Yarid’s has carried them.”

Occupation: Chief development officer, Carilion Clinic

Age: 58

Location: Kirk Avenue, Roanoke

Date: Friday, February 1, 2013

Time: 12:47 p.m.

——————-

What caught my eye: It was cold Friday afternoon, I mean cold.

When I saw Kay turn the corner I knew I needed to catch her quick before she found someplace warm.

I really love all the layering — tights to stay warm with her skirt and her coat was long to cover as much as possible. Also, take note of her boots. Kay means business with those tall, narrowstreet style and fashion in roanoke virginia. Womens winter fashion via The Roanoke Times - Style Street with David Verde heels.

Lucille Lancry: lost her luggage, not her style, Washington & Lee Campus, Lexington

Name: Lucille Lancry

Who is your style icon? “I like Alexa Chung — she has a Parisian style, and I’m from Paris.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “My coat, I actually lost my luggage on my flight from Paris to visit the U.S., so it’s the only thing I originally owned.”

Occupation: Literature student in France

Age: 23

Location: Washington & Lee Campus, Lexington

Date: Monday, January 7, 2013

Time: 4:56 p.m.

What caught my eye: Lucille’s coat just looked warm and cozy. Her gold watch and chambray shirt weren’t so obvious, but great details in her outfit.

Dawn Williams: bold in neutral colors, First Street, Roanoke

Name: Dawn Williams

How would you describe your personal style? “I’d like to think I’m a classic eclectic. I like simple lines, tend to pick solid colors versus detailed patterns. I’ll spice it up with jewelry, scarves and other accessories.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “My booties.”

Where to get it: Rack Room Shoes

Occupation: Administrative officer

Age: 40

Location: First Street, Roanoke

Date: Monday, January 7, 2013

Time: 1:34 p.m.

——————

What caught my eye: Winter is all about layers isn’t it? I think so.

Dawn’s outfit was subtle with each piece of her outfit in a different shade of neutral. In this case, bold colors were not needed to make a statement.

Also you’ll notice that pop in the coat collar I’ve been seeing around town lately. Keeps the cold air off your neck with a little attitude.

Ariel Clark: denim and green, Jefferson Street, Roanoke

Name: Ariel Clark

Something you would never be caught wearing? “I don’t like paisley patterns or pastel colors.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “My green parka.”

Where to get it: GAP

Occupation: Art director at Neathawk Dubuque & Packett

Age: 29

Location: Jefferson Street, Roanoke

Date: Wednesday, January 2, 2013

Time: 3:10 p.m.

What caught my eye: First off, these are the kind of shoes you wear to work ladies!

Why don’t more women have a pair of heels like this stowed away under their desks? The trend of shape-ups during the downtown Roanoke lunch hour needs to go. Most people who work downtown don’t have that far to walk by city standards — a city block in New York or Charlotte are twice the distance of our blocks in downtown Roanoke. I promise your feet won’t hate you for the several hundred yards you may hoof.

If you must swap out your kicks for lunch, get some ballet flats. Moving on.

Military-style parka’s like Ariel’s are classic, designers have been copying this garment for years. The best part, her coat isn’t from a high-end department store, she got it from the GAP. You don’t have to spend a lot to get a lot.

Ashley Anthony: red, white and blue, Church Avenue, Roanoke

Name: Ashley Anthony

Who is your style icon? “Kim Kardashian, but only for her style. Her personal life is not something I condone.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece?: “My Tom Ford sunglasses, I wanted them ever since I saw them at the Tom Ford boutique on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. My boyfriend found them at Nordstrom online and ordered them for me as a gift.”

Where to get it: Nordstrom.com

Occupation: Account executive at Neathawk Dubuque & Packett

Age: 25

Location: Church Avenue, Roanoke

Date: Wednesday, January 2, 2013

Time: 2:34 p.m.

——————

What caught my eye: Red, white and blue would seem to be easy colors to pull off together, but I truly think it takes a bit of fashion finesse to do well.

As you can see here with Ashley, when done right it creates a stunning marriage of blue colors that are classic and a little patriotic. Ashley’s outfit reminded me of another picture I took last summer with similar shades of red and blue.

Maggie Morgan: red-violet velvet, Salem Avenue, Roanoke

Name: Maggie Morgan

Something you would never been caught wearing? “Crocs and those 5-finger shoe things.”

What’s this outfit’s signature piece? “My scarf, I wear it with everything.”

Where to get it: Goodwill

Occupation: Waitress/student

Age: 19

Location: Salem Avenue, Roanoke

Date: Wednesday, December 19, 2012

Time: 4:20 p.m.

——————-

What caught my eye: Where do I start? Red-violet colored velvet dress, black micro fishnet tights, frayed booties, add some attitude with a leather coat, scarf, finished off with a small topknot hair-do and evening-ready makeup. Oh, and she’s gorgeous.

About this blog

Welcome to The Roanoke Times' Style Street blog where I, David Verde, will share my street fashion finds from around Southwest Virginia.

How do I do it? I go on a walk with my camera, and when I find people I think look stylish or unique, I stop them and ask if I can take their picture. Although people can be hesitant, nervous and sometimes blush, most say yes.

I make regular visits to Lexington, Blacksburg, Roanoke, Radford, Lynchburg and Friday night jamborees in Floyd. If you see me out, feel free to say hi and pose.
