A mix of rain and sunshine didn't keep 65 volunteers and local southwest county residents from supporting the Cave Spring Volunteer Rescue Squad Saturday afternoon at their annual chicken barbecue dinner held twice a year.

The rescue squad sold out of tickets around 4 p.m. Saturday and served about 1,200 dinner in the course of only three hours. The volunteers and community raised about $4,000 for the volunteer rescue squad.

Those who bought dinner tickets either came and picked up their food in their car, or enjoyed the company of other people in the community inside the rescue squad between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Dinners cost $7, with homemade barbecue sauce which, Sharon Campbell President of the Auxiliary said has been a secret recipe forever.

"It's always the same recipe, the same barbecue sauce they've used for some years," Campbell said.

Permanent barbecue pits outside of the rescue squad were filled with chicken breasts and the volunteers were up at 7 a.m. making green beans and rolls. The Roanoker Restaurant donated the coleslaw. A table filled with cakes, pies, and cookies stretched across the dining room made mostly by volunteers.

"A former captain's mother made about 19 cakes," Campbell added. "We couldn't do this with out all the members and the community."

John Roe a volunteer for the Cave Spring Fire Department, who came out for dinner at the barbecue with his wife, Kim Roe said, "We support each other."

The Cave Spring Rescue Squad will use the money raised to purchase new ambulances and rapid response vehicles.

"This crew does a lot," Rebecca Arthur, charter member of the Auxiliary and life member of he Rescue Squad said. "There aren't many squads out there with an auxiliary."
