April 29, 2008Hidden Valley girls' basketball team wins Good Sportsmanship Award![]() The Roanoke Civitan Club selected Hidden Valley High School Girls' Basketball team as recipient of the Good Sportsmanship Award for 2008 yesterday. The girl's team not only won this award but also won the 2008 Group AA state championship and players Abby Oliver and Kylee Beecher made The Roanoke Times' Timesland Region IV Girls First Team. Abby Oliver was also name Region IV Player of the Year and coach Mick McGuire was name Region IV Coach of the Year. The Sportsmanship award is given annually to a deserving high school girl's basketball team in the valley. It was presented to Coach McGuire and members of his team at a luncheon hosted by the Roanoke Civitan Club. The award is given to one out of approximately 40 teams. ![]() Hidden Valley High School was selected as the winner by the Western Virginia Basketball Officials Association. Official scored players, coaches, cheerleaders, and fans on their sportsmanlike behavior throughout the season. Hidden Valley High athletic director Dennis Layman was also present for the trophy presentation and team member Katie Degen received a $500 scholarship from the Civitan Club. The Civitan Club is a civic group dedicated to serving the community. Through its service work, the Roanoke Civitan Club seeks to create better communities and citizens. In a time when good sportsmanship is not always the norm, the organization believes in honoring community members who embody the Club’s core values.
