24th Annual High School Art Exhibition winners announced

Local students had the opportunity to enter their work into an art exhibition and show off their artistic ability. Now, the Arts Council of the Blue Ridge has announced the winners of the 24th annual high school art exhibition. The Arts Council received more than 800 entries from 19 area high schools. 74 works were selected by Jurors Ed Dolinger and Talia Logan for the exhibition.

The winners were announced at the Richard Wetherill Visual Arts Center at Hollins University and the exhibition was sponsored by the Roanoke Arts Commission with support from the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum.

Prize monies awarded totaled more than $1,700 and included:
-Best in Show: “Aftermath” Lindsay Maxwell, Salem High School
-Second Place: “Pears” Angle McCord, Staunton River High School
-Third Place: “Ghangbin's Explosives” Ghangbin Kim, Blacksburg High School
-Mark McConnel Purchase Award: “Victorious” Caitlin Carper, Arnold R. Burton Center for the Visual Arts
-Commission’s Choice Award: “In My World” Phoebe Lustig, Patrick Henry High School
-Charles Cash Award for Best Art from Nature: “Carvin's Cove” Rebecca Smith, Northside High School
-Wentworth Prize for Best Use of Media: “Aftermath” Lindsay Maxwell, Salem High School
-Clean Valley Council Award for Best Use of Recycled Materials: “Accordion” Rachel McConnel, Roanoke Catholic School
-TAP Award: “Carvin's Cove” Rebecca Smith, Northside High School
-Dick and Mary Jane Robers Award: “Untitled” Jessica Justis, Lord Botetourt High School
-Mabel and James Weddle Memorial Award: “Oh Lord, Where Are You?” Hannah Swann, Cave Spring High School
-Dolinger Award: “Ace” Molly Western, Arnold R. Burton Center for the Visual Arts

The exhibition will run through June 8 at Fishburn Hall at the Richard Wetherill Visual Arts Center at Hollins University.

Certificates of Distinction were presented to Erica Barnes, Amanda Bill, Sarah Brighton, Spencer Erickson, Kayla Gatti, Christine Gilboy, Margeau Graybill, Jessica Justis, Casey Landey, John McClung, Ian O'Bryan, Kendall Pollock, Rachel Scott, Lisa Seo and Britni Wilson

The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge is the designated local arts agency in southwest Virginia. This activity is funded in part by a grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, The National Endowment for the Arts and the City of Roanoke.
