Public meeting at Garst Mill rescheduled

The public meeting at Garst Mill in Roanoke County has been rescheduled for June 2, 2008.

The Restoration of Mudlick Creek at Garst Mill Park will focus on controlling the hydrologic regime by restoring natural channel geometry (recreating meanders and accessing the floodplain) to reduce stream bank erosion, restoring the in-stream habitat structure and augmenting the riparian cover through native vegetation plantings.

As of July 2006, the County of Roanoke received grants totaling almost $300,000 from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Water Quality Improvement Fund, to perform an urban stream restoration on Mudlick Creek in Garst Mill Park.

Project Components:

A. Grade and Stabilize stream channel, banks, and bed.
B. Place trees, shrubs, rocks, and mats along the stream.
C. Grade and shape stream bends to improve flow and increase pool habitat.
D. Remove maintenance vehicle stream crossing.

Benefits:

A. Provide suitable habitat for terrestrial and aquatic species.
B. Improve aesthetic quality.
C. Provide a stream side filled with trees and shrubs.
D. Protect park infrastructure, road and banks.
E. Improve quality of water.

The project is estimated to be complete by December 2008.
