A bear encounter on 12 O'Clock Knob

Bill Shepherd tells us he recently saw two bears crossing 12 O'Clock Knob Road. Here's his account:

2 bears, most likely a mother & cub, although the cub was fairly large, (maybe 150 pounds). The larger bear was good sized, (maybe 300+ pounds)
07:15 on July 13th, crossing Twelve O'Clock road, appx 200 yards south of the top of the mountain (on the 221 side of the mountain).

We have a nifty online map where we keep track of bear sightings, so we've added Bill's account to it. Our bear map is part our Datasphere site of all sorts of searchable information -- from crime stats to places where you can buy locally-grown food, from a database of the biggest fish caught in Virginia to Frank Beamer's coaching record at Virginia Tech.

If you've seen a bear in Southwest Roanoke County, let us know -- when, where, what. And if bears are your thing, you might be interested in these photos that a fellow near Salem sent us of a bear raiding the bird feeder in his back yard. Or this one, also near Salem.
