Cave Spring Middle defeats Andrew Lewis in volleyball

Here’s a late (by our 24/7 standards) report on Cave Spring Middle School’s volleyball team, but it’s good news, and we’re happy to pass it on.

The Cave Spring Middle School volleyball team defeated Andrew Lewis Middle School on Monday, taking two straight games 26-24 and 25-14. We haven’t gotten a report yet from Cave Spring, but we have from Andrew Lewis, so you can get the Andrew Lewis perspective on things here.

If anyone from Cave Spring wants to add anything about the game, feel free to click “comment” below — or email us at news@swo-co.com.

As always, if you have news or photos involving teams or players from Southwest Roanoke County — doesn’t matter whether it’s varsity, junior varsity, middle school or rec league — you can share them at news@swo-co.com

Hidden Valley Middle football team falls to Andrew Lewis

We have the score: Andrew Lewis 8, Hidden Valley 6. And we have an account of the game — from the Andrew Lewis perspective.

And if you have photos, well, we love sports photos. If you have news or photos involving teams or players from Southwest Roanoke County, whether varsity, junior varsity, middle school or rec league, you can share them at news@swo-co.com

Roanoke County crime map updated through August 24

DataSphereLogoSmall.gif

We’ve just updated our Roanoke Valley crime map with the latest offenses from Roanoke County — and Roanoke and Salem, as well. The data includes offenses through August 24.

Last week in Southwest Roanoke County, police reported four larcenies, three burglaries and one aggravated assault.

Our data delivery editor, Matt Chittum, has more information how you can use the searchable crime map.

Also on our Datasphere collection of searchable data: Who’s selling beer to your kids? You can look up to see which stores got busted for selling to underage buyers and how big a fine they had a pay.

Hidden Valley volleyball JVs fall to Franklin County

swoco_hiddenvalleyjvvolleyballSMALL.jpg

It was a split decision down in Franklin County night. The Hidden Valley varsity volleyball team won 3 games to 1, as reported on the sports pages of today’s Roanoke Times.

Unfortunately for the Titans, the junior varsity team lost — 15-25 and 20-25. Their record now stands at 1-2.

Coach Aaron King tells us: “Our team is young this year but we have a lot of talented players. The girls are still getting to know each other and working to become more comfortable on the court. Once that happens I think we’ll be playing some really good volleyball.”

The next Hidden Valley volleyball game is Tuesday at Lord Botetourt High School at 6 p.m. The Cavaliers lost yesterday to Glenvar, by the way. We have a report on that game here.

As always, if you have news or photos involving teams or players from Southwest Roanoke County — whether varsity, junior varsity, middle school or rec league — you can share them at news@swo-co.com.

Sir Mackey is knighted at Cave Spring High School

Cave Spring High School senior Greg Mackey has been selected as the 2008-9 Knight by principal Steve Spangler. Being named the Knight is the highest honor any student can achieve at Cave Spring High School. Mackey becomes the 48th student to be honored with the title of Knight at Cave Spring High School. Mackey is the SCA president-elect, captain of the Cave Spring boys’ basketball team and vice-president of the Beta Club. He attended Boys’ State at Liberty University over the summer and has attended the HOBY Leadership Conference in Newport News.

“Greg is an outstanding student and embodies the qualities of a Knight,” said CSHS principal Steve Spangler. “We all are very proud of Greg and he will represent the Cave Spring student body very well,” said Spangler.

Probably the most notable Cave Spring Knight is former NFL star Tiki Barber (1992-1993 school year).

Your online guide to the August 29 issue of SWoCo

swoco_hiddenvalleycheerleadersSMALL.jpg

It’s Hidden Valley week here at SWoCo. And also North Cross. And Faith Christian. In last week’s print edition, we previewed fall sports at Cave Spring High School, just in time for the Knights’ kick-off last weekend. This week, we look at fall sports at the other schools. And that makes now a good time for a few programming notes:

* We want your fall sports photos. If you have photos that involve teams or players from Southwest Roanoke County, you can share them at news@swo-co.com. We’ll post them here — and use as many as we can in full color in our weekly print edition, which reaches more than 90 percent of the households in Southwest Roanoke County. We can’t be everywhere with our cameras, but you’re already there, so send ‘em on! (How do we do that 90 percent thing? See below!)

* Check here for junior varsity and middle school scores. Our cousins in the sports department at The Roanoke Times publish varsity scores, but not lower age levels. We will, and we have. Here are the most recent results from Cave Spring and Hidden Valley. We care about all sports at all age levels. If you’re not seeing your school’s action here, ask ‘em to send it — or you can send your own report. Rec league, too!

In Friday’s print edition, you’ll see places where we say “see the Notebook” for more. Here’s a guide to where to find those online extras:

* Photos of the ‘50s show at the Jefferson Center
* Cave Spring United Methodist Church seeks money for Katrina victims
* Civil War expert Bud Robertson to speak at 419 library
* More on the Star Country Cure Kids Cancer radiothon
* More photos from Faith Christian orientation
* More on bear sightings in Southwest Roanoke County — including our map of bear sightings in Western Virginia.
* More photos from Colonial Presbyterian’s Vacation Bible School. (Does your church have photos to share?)
* Who’s selling beer to your kids? See which stores have been busted for selling to underage buyers.

And in sports . . .
* August 26: Cave Spring golfers featured on Varsity Cast webcast.
* August 24: Photo gallery from Cave Spring’s football opener.
* Photos of Hidden Valley’s fall sports teams.
* Photos from North Cross football practice

Photos from blood drive at Lifewise Fitness

red%20cross%20edit.jpg

The American Red Cross held a blood drive on Wednesday, August 27 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at LifeWise Fitness on Brambleton Avenue.

Q-99 radio personalities Dick and Dave, 94.9 Star Country personalities Robynn Jaymes and Brett Sharp, and Fox 21/27 were there to support the Red Cross Blood Drive.

Volunteer Judy Kristoff said, “It has been really good, regardless of the weather.”

The Red Cross had a goal in mind for the drive which included about 60 people. Those in the community were able to register beforehand but walk-ins were welcome too.

As off 12 p.m., Charge Nurse, Kathy Wray said, “We’ve had at least 14 people sign in. We’re doing pretty well.”

This was the first blood drive held at LifeWise Fitness by the American Red Cross. Buffalo Wild Wings provided food for those who donated and drinks, cookies, and other snacks were plentiful.

Dalh Brown, with Donor Recruitment said, “This blood drive originated from this being a health center. It’s been running on the radio and it’s been going really well. We’ve had people walk in and people are really stepping up to the plate. The community has been great. I’ve found that when you ask people in the Valley to donate they are willing to help.”

By the end of the blood drive, the Red Cross had collected 41 pints of blood and had 17 first time donors.

Check out some of the people who attended the blood drive at our gallery here.
