Cave Spring volleyball JVs defeat Christiansburg

swoco_cavespringjvvolleyballSMALL.jpg

The morning sports pages of The Roanoke Times tell us that Cave Spring’s varsity volleyball team defeated Christiansburg on Thursday. Now, Moriah Moore of Cave Spring reports on the junior varsity team:

“Cave Spring’s JV volleyball team pulled off a victory over Christiansburg on Thursday night. The Knights won the first game 25-22 and fell to Christiansburg in the second game 15-25. Cave Spring was down 11-14 in game three when Hannah Sitze got up to serve, recording 3 aces to help the Knights come back to win 16-14.”

Needle on the Square remains open until Tuesday

Oops. Like like our item in today’s print issue of SWoCo closed the Needle on the Square knit shop a few days too soon. The store will remain open through Tuesday at 5 p.m.

After that, you can find “The Queen of Needlepoint” at the Yarn Explosion on Airport Road.

For more on the store — its closing, and the opening of a new yarn shop — we had posts on September 16 and August 15.

Hidden Valley football game postponed until Monday

The Titans won’t be playing in a rainy mess, after all.

Tonight’s Hidden Valley – Northside game has been postponed until Monday at 7 p.m. because of rain. It’s one of a growing number of cancellations in the region. For more cancellations, click here.

Cave Spring has a bye week this week, so the Knights will stay dry, regardless.

Roanoke County crime map updated through Sept. 21

DataSphereLogoSmall.gif

We’ve just updated our Roanoke Valley crime map with the latest offenses from Roanoke County — and Roanoke and Salem, as well. The data includes offenses through September 21.

Last week in Southwest Roanoke County, police reported six larcenies and one rape.

Our data delivery editor, Matt Chittum, has more information how you can use the searchable crime map.

Also on our Datasphere collection of searchable data: The health department reports on the mouse-infested Roanoke City Market building.

Football forecast: A rainy mess tonight

Cave Spring has a bye this week, and the Knights might be the lucky ones. Hidden Valley plays at Northside tonight, North Cross is at home this afternoon against Hargrave Military Academy — and both will play in a rainy mess. Weather journalist Kevin Myatt has the latest on his weather blog.

Photos of alpacas and fog on Bent Mountain

Ed Kinser of Bent Mountain sent this into us:

“We have a little farm on Bent Mountain and have recently had some baby alpacas. Also attached is a photo (actually, three merged photos) taken from Rt.221 when it starts down Bent Mt., looking out into the Roanoke Valley on a foggy morning.  It was taken in the fall a couple of years ago.”

A glimpse of Southwest County gardens

Roberta Bondurant toured a variety of Southwest County gardens in August, interviewing several folks about interesting gardening methods they employ.

Her report appears in Friday’s print edition of SWoCo.  If you want a sneak peek, you can click here to read the story.

Click here, though, to see more photos of the gardens she describes in the article.  They include this photo of Emma Kate Shaver, who helps her grandfather, Bill Hames, with his unique gardening method.
