September 17, 2008Roanoke County is 71% smoke-freeThe restaurants in Roanoke County, that is. The Virginia Department of Health added to its website a list of smoke-free restaurants int the state -- and also computed what percentage of restaurants in each locality can be considered smoke-free. The highest percentage belongs to Craig County, where 100 percent of the restaurants are smoke-free. The lowest is Petersburg, where only 4 percent of the restaurants are smoke-free. Statewide, the figure is 67 percent, so Roanoke County is just a silly millimeter or so over the average. If anyone remembers the old Benson & Hedge's ads, you'll get the reference. For the state's website, click here. Once you get there, look under "information and resources" on the right hand side of the page. Reed Braden : →http://gaytheist.wordpress.comRemember when we used to have things called sections? You know... when the restaurants were divided into "smoking and non"? Those who wanted to smoke could sit under a big noisy vent that sucked their fumes out of the restaurant and those that didn't could sit on the other side of the restaurant and not have to smell the smokers? I guess the days of accommodating all people are over. This is just one more moralistic battle where the people on the anti-choice side aren't content with not choosing, they also want to take the choice away from others.
The "smoking section" idea worked for so long, but people aren't content with just not smelling smoke anymore, they don't want to be anywhere near it. Even if it's behind a glass barricade and under a strong vent.
