Good Samaritan Hospice honors National Hospice Month

The hospice, with an office based in Southwest Roanoke County, has sent this information about events to be held in November:

Good Samaritan Hospice Celebrates the Love and Care of Hospice during National Hospice Month

“Hospice…Love…Dignity…Hope”

November is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month and hospices across the country are reaching out to raise awareness about important care issues for people coping with life-limiting illness.

“Every year, more than 1.5 million people living with a life-limiting illness receive care from hospice and palliative care providers in this country,” said J. Donald Schumacher, president and CEO of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. “These highly-trained professionals provide quality medical care and work to make sure patients and families find dignity, respect, and love during life’s most difficult journey.”

Hospice is more than traditional healthcare. Hospice and palliative care programs provide pain management, symptom control, psychosocial support, and spiritual care to patients and their families when a cure is not possible. Hospice and palliative care combines the highest level of quality medical care with the emotional and spiritual support that families need most when facing the end of life.

“Hospice care is comprehensive, embracing the whole person, including his or her family,” explained Cindy Hagerman, Director of Community Relations for Good Samaritan Hospice. “For example, Good Sam offers programs such as Complementary Therapies which incorporates music, massage, pet and/or stress management into patient care when appropriate. Another program called Memory Catchers allows patients to preserve their stories as an heirloom to share with loved ones in the years ahead.”

** In honor of National Hospice Month, Good Samaritan Hospice will have a “Hospice Open House” at Tanglewood and New River Valley Malls every Tuesday during the month of November from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Stop by the information tables to learn more about Advance Directives, initiating end-of-life discussions, the hospice philosophy of care or to ask specific questions. Hot cider and cookies will be provided.

Additional information about hospice, palliative care, and advance care planning is available from Good Samaritan Hospice at www.goodsamhospice.org or by calling 540-776-0198 (Roanoke) or 540-381-3171 (NRV).

More on the 2008 Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame honorees

Junior Achievement of Southwest Va., Inc. sent this news release about recent honorees:

A distinguished committee of Roanoke Valley business leaders has selected Billy H. Branch, chairman of Branch Management Corp., and Lorinda “Rindy” and Samuel L. Lionberger, Jr. as the 2008 Business Hall of Fame Laureates.

They were selected because of their great influence in the business world and their deep commitment to community, education and children. Approximately 230 guests attended the Laureate induction at the 18th annual Southwest Virginia Business Hall of Fame dinner on Oct. 14 at the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center.

For 18 years the Southwest Virginia business community and Junior Achievement honors its own by recognizing the lifetime achievements of at least two Laureates. This premier event upholds the mission of Junior Achievement to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy.

This year’s Laureates have been very instrumental in the growth of Southwest Virginia and each has had a hand in spurring on economic development through their vision, teamwork and ethical manner. Together they have cleared land for emerging highways, developed the first “green” residential community, created four new companies, provided their workers an ESOP, build a prison, erected the Rescue Mission, created industrial work sites, hospitals, universities, churches, schools, and state of the art camp sites. The three Laureates have done so much to improve the quality of life in Southwest Virginia, and they have created strong companies that are now under the leadership of their sons. Read more »
