Tim Thornhill sent us these photo of the plane crash on the side of Sharp Top mountain at the Peaks of Otter in 1943. Five soldiers were killed on a training mission. Jim Rhodes and Tim went to see it and met another Roanoker on the trail who didn’t know about the crash as most people don’t. So he and a friend joined them on a steep hike about 400 yards to the crash site, aided by their handheld GPS which they use for geocaching. The wreckage is amazingly almost all still there-big and small pieces. The wreckage extends 600 feet down the side of the mountain according to a website. It is a very solemn spot and brings reality to history in our back yard.
