Matt Harman wins Andrew Haley Memorial Golf Tournament

Matt Harman, a rising senior at Cave Spring High School, fired a 3-over par 75 in the second round to capture the Championship 2009 Andrew Haley Memorial Golf Tournament Championship at Mariner’s Landing Golf and Country Club. This year’s event featured close to 100 players including junior players in both boys and girls competition competition. Harman took the first round lead with a 2-over 73 at The Waterfront Country Club on Monday. He finished the 36-hole event event with 148, 2 strokes ahead of second place finishers Dylan Jenson of Martinsville and Stanely Shelton of Chatham. Clay O’Conner of Botetourt finished fifth. Other local players with strong finishes in the 50 player 16-18 age group included James Kasza tenth with Alex Taylor and Brad Elder tied at eleventh.

In the 14-15 age group Drew Lagan, a 13 year old rising eighth grader at Cave Spring, tied for first at 145 with Austin Inman of Forest, Virginia. Lagan lost in the first hole of sudden death and finished second in the tournament. Bassett’s Tyler Weeks was third with a 146 for a two day total.

The 2009 Andrew Haley Memorial Junior Golf Tournament was played July 13-14 at Smith Mountain he two day tournament is an annual event sponsored by the Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club. Junior golfers from both Virginia and North Carolina participated in this years championship which was held at The Waterfront Country Club and Mariner’s Landing Golf and Country Club.
