Purple Rain: Faith Christian Warriors Pick Up a Tough Point on the Road

Logan Dalton, a student at Faith Christian School has submitted the following article regarding the Faith Christian Girls’ Varsity basketball game.

Read the article below:

The Faith Warriors (0-1-0) rolled into their season opener at cross-town rival Roanoke Valley Christian in the first game since their runner up finish in the VACA state championship, last year. The pitch was muddy, and it periodically rained. In the early going, strikers Morgan Oliver and Rachel Nymeyer flooded the box and peppered the Eagles’ keeper with a barrage of shots until Nymeyer broke through with a high arching rainbow in the 12th minute off a gorgeous pass from junior midfielder Monica Pollard.  Throughout the half, gritty defenders Sarah Graninger, Jackie Jessop, Allison Dalton, and Morgan Wood kept the ball in RVCS territory, and Wood had some beautiful long balls, but the strikers couldn’t convert. At the half, the score was Faith leading RVCS 1-0 with veteran goaltender Kathryn Conrad virtually unchallenged.

In the second half, Coach Roy Lax subbed striker Nymeyer for Kathryn Conrad in goal. The Eagles made bolder attacks this period, and senior captain Sarah Graninger’s stalwart play at center back saved many possible goals. However, in the 51st minute, RVCS basketball star Samantha Puckett made a bending free kick over Nymeyer that would have made David Beckham proud. Later in the match, Nymeyer preserved the deadlock by saving a point blank penalty kick. Clears by Morgan Wood and reserve defender Gail Adams gave the Warriors possession for much of the half, but no goals were scored. In the 78th minute, seniors Morgan Wood and Morgan Oliver had a perfect two on one with the last defender beat, and Wood scored an amazing goal. This goal was nullified by a controversial call, and the Lady Warriors had to settle for a 1-1 tie.
