Meet the new Senior Pastor at Cave Spring Baptist Church

Pastor Pete Schemm just started his new position as Senior Pastor at Cave Spring Baptist Church Oct. 1 and he already has a good following. It’s not just that he was interim pastor for a year, it’s just that people love him. And prior to interviewing him this week all of his colleagues at the church raved about how “fun” he is.

Born in Pennsylvania, but raised in Tampa Florida, Schemm attended the University of Georgia and majored in Business Administration. While he was studying to do insuranve he said that  he sensed God’s direction.  It was at UGA that Schemm became a Christian at 18-years-old.

“My worldview changed,” Schemm said. “I sensed his direction to serve the church and not my empire.”

After college him and his family moved to North Carolina and lived in the Wake Forest area from 1992 until 2010. While in Wake Forest he taught for 10 years as Associate Professor of Theology at Southeastern Baptist Theological
Seminary.

“For me, my calling has not changed and my calling has been to serve the church by teaching scripture and biblical teaching,” Schemm said.

The Schemm’s packed up their things and moved to Roanoke this October from North Carolina and so far, have been incredibly impressed with Roanoke.

“We love it. These are really good people,” Schemm said.”We love the area. This transition has allowed us to consolidate our lives into one community. It’s exciting and I’m encouraged by that.”

At Cave Spring Baptist Church, Schemm hopes to give clear teaching of scripture, and to get the church to think with their minds.Rather than just welcoming people into the church Schemm wants to see the church go to the people.

“I hope my minstry will be marked with clear teaching and substantive teaching,” he said. “The church needs to thin in different paradime. I hope we can mark the community and engage the community.”

As a member of the community he and his family want to serve the community as a family.

“We feel like are here to serve this par of the community not just the church,” Schemm said.

Pete and Vicki, his wife, have eight children, Charis, 16, Colby, 13, Jacob, 10, Zachary, 9, Parker, 8, Anderson, 5, Mary Kathryn, 4, and Chase, 9 months.
