Hidden Valley High School to hold Cheerleading Rec. Camp

Calling all Cheerleaders! Hidden Valley High School Cheerleading Rec. Camp 2011 August 9th, 10th, and 11th from 6:30-8:00pm. The camp is for any local elementary or middle school student. The fee is $20.00 per child. The camp will be held at HiddenValley High School Auxiliary gym. Five players of the Roanoke Badgers to play college baseball

The five players have played with the Roanoke Badgers since they were 10 years old, accumulating hundreds of wins, more than a dozen tournament titles, two Virginia state championships and a national #1 ranking in USSSA. In recent years, they have played on the Badgers 18u showcase team in events at more than three dozen college campuses.

The Roanoke Badgers 2011 college-bound class is pictured above at a signing ceremony. Front left is Austin Gregory, a Hidden Valley pitcher who will play for Roanoke College. Front center is Cory Smith, a Hidden Valley pitcher who will play for Washington and Lee University. Front right is Craig Hoelzer, a North Cross infielder who will play for Johns Hopkins University. Back left is Aaron Burton, a Patrick Henry infielder who will play for University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Back right is Andy Richards, a Hidden Valley pitcher who will play for Virginia Military Institute.

More on McCallum’s return to Green Valley Elementary

The Roanoke County School Board has selected Ashley McCallum as the new principal at Green Valley Elementary. McCallum, who currently is the principal at Masons Cove Elementary, previously served as the assistant principal at Green Valley. She replaces Tammy Newcomb who earlier was named the principal at William Byrd Middle School.

McCallum first came to Roanoke County Public Schools in 1999 as a physical education teacher at Mountain View Elementary School. She was named the assistant principal at Green Valley in 2006 and became the principal at Masons Cove Elementary in 2009.

McCallum holds a Bachelor’s degree in physical education and an elementary education endorsement from Roanoke College. She also holds a Masters degree in education from Virginia Tech.

“Ashley was a great assistant principal at Green Valley and has been a wonderful principal at Masons Cove,” said Roanoke County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Lorraine Lange. “I’m confident Green Valley will continue to excel under her leadership,” Dr. Lange added.

12th Annual Q99 Pack the Bus for underprivileged children is August 10 at the Clearbrook Walmart

The 12th Annual “Pack the Bus” for underprivileged children will collect school supplies for southwest Roanoke County schools on Wednesday, August 10 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Clearbrook Walmart.

Businesses and individuals are encouraged to drop off donations at the specified location.

Divine Dance Center wins big at national dance competition

In Gatlinburg, July 5th – 9th, Divine Dance Center competed against dozens of dance studios from around the country for prestigious top honors at Celebration Talent Competition. Their entries placed as follows : “Shout” received 1st place overall in Junior Rising Star Duo/Trio. Claudia Anderson (Cave Spring Middle School) received 7th place overall in Teen Shining Star Solos. Christina Lauria (Hidden Valley Middle School) received 3rd place overall in Teen Shining Star Solos. Joey d’Alelio (Cave Spring Middle School) received 2nd place overall in Teen Shining Star Solos. “Camille, Collette, Fifi” received 2nd place overall in Teen Shining Star Duo/Trios. “Whose Got the Pain” received 1st place overall in Teen Shining Star Duo/Trios. “Freak” received 2nd place overall in Teen Shining Star Small Groups. “Wounded Soldiers” received 1st place overall in Teen Shining Star Small Groups. Tony d’Alelio received 1st overall in Senior Shining Star Solos. “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” received 1st overall in Senior Shining Star Duo/Trios. Divine Dance Center also received several special awards: “Divas” was awarded a Performance Award. “Pirates” was awarded a Showstopper Award. “Wounded Soldiers” was awarded a Showstopper Award. “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” was awarded the Choreography Award. “Coffee Break” was awarded a Performance Award. “Love Shack” was awarded a Showstopper Award. Four of Divine Dance Center’s routines were selected to re-compete for the national title. Those selected were: “Pirates”, “Wounded Soldiers”, “Love Shack”, and “Coffee Break.” “Pirates” was awarded 5th Overall Grand National Champion in the 12 & under routines. “Coffee Break” was awarded 4th Overall Grand National Champion in the 13 & over routines. “Love Shack” was awarded 3rd Overall Grand National Champion in the 13 & over routines. “Wounded Soldiers” was awarded 1st Overall 13 & Over Grand National Champion. Divine Dance Center received 7 Platinum Awards, 18 High Gold Awards, and 24 Gold Awards.

Cave Spring student headed to Poland with symphony

Megan Pasquarell, who attends Cave Spring High School, is one of five students from the Roanoke Symphony Youth Orchestra traveling to Poland this summer for two weeks of studying and performing.
