Virginia Cooperative Extension searches for Master Food Volunteers

A Brand New Opportunity: Become a Master Food Volunteer

Do you love to cook? Would you like to learn more about nutrition and wellness? Do you enjoy volunteering? Would you like to make a difference in your community? If so, Virginia Cooperative Extension is looking for qualified applicants to become Master Food Volunteers. The thirty hour training will include topics such as basic nutrition, meal planning, cooking techniques, food safety, exercise and healthy lifestyles, and working with diverse audiences. As a Master Food Volunteer, you would be expected to give back at least 30 hours of volunteer time, but the opportunities are varied depending on your preferences. The volunteer goal is to support Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Extension Educators and Family Nutrition Program personnel, with education and outreach in a variety of ways such as: health fairs, food demonstrations, farmers market displays, grocery store displays, food preservation demonstrations, cooking classes, working with youth and working with limited income people.

There will be a Roanoke and New River Valley joint training in Shawsville, Virginia on Tuesdays; October 4, 11, 18, 25, concluding Nov. 1, from 10 – 3:30. For more information and to receive an application, contact the Roanoke Office at 540-772-7524, dchappel@vt.edu or stop by the office at The Brambleton Center.
