The Girl Scouts of Troop #321 are concerned about childhood hunger in the Roanoke Valley. They are also working on their Silver Award. So they decided to combine the two and provide healthy snacks for students at Oak Grove Elementary School who might otherwise go hungry at home.
They are planning a yard sale/bake sale this Saturday, April 14, to raise funds for the project. It will take place from 8 a.m. till noon at 5417 Apple Blossom Lane [in Ronaoke]. Eight families are participating.
The scouts will assemble boxes of 100% fruit juice, crackers, fruit and cereal and granola bars for about two dozen children. They will also include copies of games and worksheets for the children to learn about the benefits of healthy eating.
“I am so appreciative that Girl Scout Troop #321 ‘adopted’ our school for their Silver Award requirements. It is so powerful to see children, at this young age, recognizing a need in the community, setting a goal, and putting a plan into action to make it work,” said Oak Grove Principal Cris Flippen. “I appreciate the girls’ efforts in holding a yard sale fundraiser on April 14 to help provide funds for this worthy project.”
