The 2012 Walter Muir Memorial chess tournament is Saturday, April 28
The 2012 Walter Muir Memorial is a three round, Grand Prix, open chess tournament sponsored by the Roanoke Valley Chess Club. This tournament will be fully-rated by the U.S. Chess Federation.
The tournament is Saturday, April 28, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, which is located at 4608 Brambleton Ave. SW in Roanoke. The church is four blocks from the intersection of Brambleton Ave. (Route 221) and Electric Road SW (Route 419). It is one block beyond the Kroger grocery store.
Rounds are at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. with G/90 (with 5 seconds delay) time controls.
Cost for advance registration is $30 up until 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 27. Registration is $40 after that date, including at the door. Registration at the door will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., Saturday, April 28.
All prizes are guaranteed! The top section consists of the eight to 11 highest-rated players. The prizes for this top section are $125 for first place, $100 for second place and $75 for third place. Other sections will be formed based on the number of players who enter.
Some examples follow:
- Octagonal section prize structure: $125 for first place and $100 for second place
- Hexagonal section prize structure: $100 for first place and $75 for second place
- Quad section prize structure: $100 for first place
If any section has less than a Quad, then this section will be combined with the one above it. In this case, the prize fund for the upper section will be increased; thus almost all of the entry fees will go for prizes!
USCF membership is required for this event. Click here for more information on the rules. Half point byes are available for any round if requested before round one (maximum one bye). No smoking or computers.
Note : There will be an enhanced chess book sale at the tournament this year !
