Tonight’s football forecast: Sticky, but maybe showers for homecoming

Kevin Myatt

Weather journalist Kevin Myatt

It’s homecoming for Hidden Valley and North Cross this weekend; Cave Spring has a bye.

The Titans host Bassett tonight at 7:30 p.m.; the Raiders host Hargrave Military on Saturday at 2 p.m.

If you’re going to the Hidden Valley game, here’s what weather journalist Kevin Myatt says to expect:

It will be a bit sticky for high school football Friday night, with temperatures holding mostly in the 70s. There will be some chance of showers or thunderstorms, though it appears the better chances by Friday night will be mostly to the south and east of the Roanoke and New River valleys. A spare poncho or umbrella for a passing shower might be a good idea.

We’re expecting photos from both games, so check back for those — or share your own at news@swo-co.com, or use the “share” tool to upload 10 at a time.

Our paparazzi photo crew will be at both school’s homecoming dances — look for those photos Monday afternoon, or share your own homecoming pix, as well.

10th Annual Star Regional Brunch and Golf Invitational is Monday, Oct. 1

The March of Dimes is proud to host its 10th Annual Star Regional Brunch and Golf Invitational on Monday, Oct. 1 at the Roanoke Country Club. Brunch and presentations honoring Nancy Agee, Ben Davenport, Jr., and John B. Williamson, III will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the golf tournament, a silent auction, and a reception with awards. This event not only celebrates the contributions that these exceptional business leaders have made to our community, but most importantly, it raises funds for research and programs that help all babies begin healthy lives.

In 2011, The March of Dimes provided over $2.6 million for personal research grants, educational programs, and community service projects throughout the state. Sadly, one in every eight babies continues to be born prematurely. To score a hole-in-one for our mission, our goal for this tournament is to raise $50,000 to assist more than 108,000 babies who are born annually in Virginia, as well as their families. Read more »

All Roanoke County schools remain fully accredited

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) announced the 2012 accreditation results Wednesday. All 26 schools in Roanoke County remain fully accredited by the VDOE. Roanoke County Public Schools joins 85 other school systems statewide with all schools fully accredited.

“I’m proud of our teachers who worked hard last year to provide outstanding education to our students,” said Dr. Lorraine Lange, Superintendent of Roanoke County Public Schools. “I’m equally proud of our students who worked hard to learn throughout the year and demonstrate that knowledge on the SOLs,” Dr. Lange added.

Statewide, ninety-three percent of Virginia’s 1,836 public schools are fully accredited and meeting all state standards for achievement in English, mathematics, history and science — and graduation, in the case of high schools. The percentage of schools earning full accreditation for 2012-2013 is three points lower than the percentage that earned the highest rating for 2011-2012.

“This year’s decrease in the percentage of schools meeting the fully accredited rating is attributed, in part, to results of the new college- and career-ready mathematics tests that were first introduced during 2011-2012,” Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Patricia I. Wright said. “We can expect a similar impact next year when we see the results of schools implementing more rigorous standards and tests in English and science this school year.”

“Even with three-year averaging, the board’s move to more rigorous standards will continue to present accreditation challenges for many of the commonwealth’s schools,” said Board of Education President David M. Foster.” We are confident, however, that over the long haul our graduates will be better prepared to succeed in college and the work place.”
