New Pastor for Garst Mill Presbyterian Church, a member congregation of The Orthodox Presbyterian Church

The Rev. Rodney T. King to pastor congregation of Garst Mill Presbyterian Church, Roanoke, VA:  The Reverend King is to be installed by the Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC) as Pastor of Garst Mill Presbyterian Church on Friday, November 30, 2012 at 7:00 pm. He will be the third pastor in the church’s history.

Since his graduation in 1974 from Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, Rev. King served as pastor of churches in SC, NC, AZ and WV in the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) denomination until February 1997. At that time he was received into the Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC) where he served as pastor of Grace Reformed Presbyterian Church in Des Moines, Iowa for over 15 years. He has been on several short term mission trips to Uganda, and also served on various denominational committees. “Christ’s Church is local, and it is also world-wide” says Rev. King.

Having grown up in North Carolina and received his college education in Bristol, TN and at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill NC., this part of the country is familiar both to him, and to his wife Anne. Pastor King says, “It is a joy to come back to this region, where there are such deep roots of Presbyterianism and the Reformed faith. What a privilege to pastor only fifty miles from Stonewall Jackson’s home, and a hundred miles from Robert L. Dabney’s pastorate!”

The Reverend King now comes to Garst Mill Presbyterian Church, a congregation which he says he has already come to love. “It is wonderful to minister among a people who rejoice in the knowledge that we are saved entirely by God’s grace, and who join with the OPC in taking that Gospel out into the world!”
The installation service will have a special family aspect to it for the Kings. One of the officers speaking will be Rev. King’s oldest son, Nathan King, who is an elder in the Redeemer OPC of Charlotte, NC. Another will be his son-in-law, Robert Lynam, a deacon in the Shiloh OPC of Cary, NC.

South Peak lights 35-foot tall Christmas tree

Perched at 1,360 feet the tree can be seen for miles.

Roanoke, Va. (November 29, 2012) – There’s a new light shining over the Roanoke Valley. Actually there are 675 of them, as the South Peak development joined the spirit of the season with the lighting of a 35-foot tall Christmas Tree on Thursday evening of November 29.

“This tree symbolizes the spirit of the season and South Peak’s bright future as a part of the Roanoke community,” said Smith/Packett CEO and founder James R. Smith, speaking to a crowd of about 100 people at the tree lighting. “Tens of thousands of people pass by here every day and we at South Peak want to share with them the warm thoughts of family and community during the holidays.”

The tree is a Leyland Cypress adorned with 675 lights. It can be seen as far away as the Roanoke Regional Airport. The tree came from a farm in Floyd County. At 35-feet tall and perched on the rim of the South Peak development, it overlooks Roanoke’s busiest corridors of Route 220 and Route 419 that service Hunting Hills and South Roanoke communities, as well as, the businesses in and near Tanglewood Mall.

The tree’s lights will come on every day at dusk until New Year’s Day.

The South Peak luxury condominiums, featuring arts and crafts design, with true mortise and tenon, timber frame trim work, is progressing quickly with its 32 one, two and three bedroom condominium residences now under roof. Crews will work through the winter, and a grand opening is expected in the first quarter of 2013. Eventual plans for South Peak call for additional residential housing, as well as space for a hotel, restaurants, offices and shopping.

You can see more photos from the event here.

About South Peak:

South Peak is unlike any other property in the region, offering a new luxury condominium community with spectacular, unimpeded vistas of downtown Roanoke and the Blue Ridge Mountains. When completed, South Peak will combine condominium residences, residential home sites, retail shopping, restaurants, office buildings, and a hotel, creating a true lifestyle community for its residents. Nestled between the Blue Ridge Mountains, Hunting Hills, and the South Roanoke area, South Peak offers easy access to shopping, dining, downtown Roanoke and Smith Mountain Lake, and provides a luxury living solution for people of all ages, from young professionals to successful executives.

Discarded ashes ruled cause of Bent Mountain brush fire

Roanoke County fire and EMS releases the following:

Fire Investigators from Roanoke County Fire & Rescue Department and the Virginia Department of Forestry have determined that discarded ashes from a woodstove caused the fire that charred 13 acres earlier this week on Bent Mountain.
Officials were first able to rule out all natural causes, such as lightning and downed power lines, and then honed in on a pile of ashes found in the woods in back of one of the homes. Although the homeowner believed the ashes were cool when he discarded them, investigators were able to determine that the ashes were hot enough to spark the fire.
Fire Officials would like to remind citizens of the proper way to dispose of ashes from a fireplace or woodstove: Store ashes in a metal container that can be tightly closed with a metal lid. Dump ashes into the container. Douse the ashes with water. Place the lid on the container and place the closed container outside your home away from combustible materials. Leave ashes in the container for several days before disposing of them. Wood ash, once completely cooled, can safely be disposed. DO NOT store your metal ash container on your deck, in your garage or in any location that may allow heat to transfer from those hot coals to nearby flammable items. DO NOT place hot ashes in a dumpster. There are certainly other combustible materials already in the dumpster.
-more-
DO NOT dispose of ashes in paper, plastic or cardboard containers. DO NOT assume the ashes are cold and pour them onto the ground (even into a hole) where leaves can blow onto them or the wind can stir up sparks. Once you are POSITIVE your container of ashes is “cold,” place in a pile and prepare your container for the next load. Teach other family members about the dangers associated with hot ash disposal. Be careful with ashes around areas you might not consider as combustible during wetter times, such as mulched flowerbeds and lawns that are drought stricken.
For more information on how to dispose of and use ashes, go to www.dof.virginia.gov.
